Our focus is mainly on advocacy - Pourquoi Pas Borgarnes is a short documentary consisting of many interviews with folks from a small town in Iceland. They share their views about how art has affected their lives and how they perceive art. We aim to show the importance of art in rural communities.
Conceiving the idea for the film came about last fall, when the Spanish filmmaker Alberto Garcia contacted me and asked if we could create something together in Iceland. Up till then my friends and collaborators hosted a handful of workshops and exhibitions mostly geared towards art and environment such as creating design objects from salvaged materials.
Dozens of talented artists/designs/film makers were coming and going in my home studio the past years.. so much seemed possible. So I was stoked when Alberto made contact and agreed to make this film together. When he arrived in Iceland it was the end of February and I was still in Italy with my boyfriend preparing paintings for an exhibition at the museum in Borgarnes. My good friend Kuba was staying at our home and waiting for Albertos arrival to assist him in filming the interviews. He is learning Icelandic and was able to conduct the interviews.
Two weeks before Albertos arrival we had dozens of Skype meetings Kuba, Alberto and I. Kuba and I discussed the details of the legwork and interviews, I worked out the sketches for the storyboard and Alberto commented on them. On route from Italy to Geneva via Facebook I arranged the filming schedule.
It was February 29th when I returned back home in Iceland. Kuba and Alberto were still filming interviews. Icelandic friends from Borgarnes were translating the texts and working together with Alberto editing the film.
Our experiences in this vast wild Icelandic landscape have been phenomenal, but not just because of the nature, we feel incredibly attached to the nature of the people in this town.
As of now Alberto is at home in Spain finishing up the editing together with our friend Erik Rex who is in NY mastering the music. We’ve had a few very nice scores donated and I am really excited about the outcome.
We submitted a proposal to the Icelandic Art Festival PLAN B, which takes place in Borgarnes, and hope to preview our film there!
As we near the final days of our campaign, Alberto García brings us a new teaser for our viewing pleasure!
