"You did it," Elliot chokes out, tears of his own closing his throat. "You were right."
In that instant, everything between them falls away—his grief, her guilt, the heaviness of their argument that looms between them like a boulder. It rolls away with ease the instant Kat throws her arms around him and clings to him, crying. Jacob was, in every way but blood, Elliot's little brother too, and because of that, he and Kat are the only two people who understand this feeling.
She's overcome when he pulls away, hands still pressed against his chest, eyes shut tight. "Come on," he whispers, slipping his arm around her shoulders and leading her into the house.
