john grew up poor

his father had lost all of his money in a bad investment and most of john’s childhood was spent watching his parents pretend that they had more money than they did - spending what they had on the latest fashions so they could still lead a respectable social life, while in private they didn’t always have food to put on the table

He was 5 years old when he was orphaned - and left with nothing

No one knew how little the Blackwoods had and when Mr. Murray (a close friend of John’s father) came to help settle the estate, he decided to take John in as his ward

John grew up with Mr. Murray’s son, Nicholas, and they lived as brothers.

John always knew that although he had grown up living like a prince, that one day, he would only have what little his parents had managed to leave him to live on and that he’d have to find a way to support himself

tbh that never really bothered john - he was grateful for the all that mr. murray had done for him - and leading a simple life, he thought, would suit him just fine

that is, until he met and fell in love with cassandra atwood

she was the only daughter of the wealthy governor and he knew that he would never agree to her marrying him

on the contrary, he hoped that he would marry nicholas murray instead

when nicholas and cassandra began their courtship, nicholas could tell that cassandra preferred john to him and so he stepped down

so john asked cassandra’s father for her hand and was unsurprised to hear that he absolutely forbade the match and that he blamed john for getting in the way of getting in the way of cassandra and nicholas

when mr. murray heard that john would not be able to marry the woman he loved because of money, he summoned both john and nicholas to him and told them that he would be leaving john with half of his own fortune, as there was more than enough for the both of them

this secretly enraged nicholas, who had always known that john was his father’s favorite (despite not being his actual son)

so nicholas stole an invaluable heirloom that had belonged to his mother (a ring that mr. murray cherished!) and he framed john for the act

he then confessed to his father that john had always been a thief and that there had been many things he had taken from him over the years, but nicholas had always been able to cover it up because he did not want to cause his father pain

enraged, mr. murray cast john from the house and threatened to have him arrested if he ever saw him again

john had lost his brother and his father in one fell swoop, but he still had cassandra

she told him she believed his innocence and that she still wanted to marry him

so they made plans to elope and run away together

john waited for hours at the church, but she never arrived

afraid that something terrible had happened, he snuck to her home, only to see her through a window - laughing and smiling with nicholas

it’s been ten long years and john has not stepped foot in port royal since

the years have not been kind to him - he spent the first of them drinking and brooding and he fell into a bad crowd as his sadness turned to anger

he joined a pirate’s crew and has since become the ship’s captain, himself

her father was one of Xavier Vardon’s chief advisors

even from an early age, bea wasn’t as taken in by the commander’s skills as most people around her were

was unphased by the grand and luxurious new life her father’s connections had given her

when she heard that there were others in the south who opposed him, she wanted to join them

was headstrong and rebellious as a girl

was NOT afraid to speak her opinion (especially when she disagreed with vardon himself)

her father HATED it

would often beat her in attempts to make her more submissive but that only made her worse

when she was sixteen, she ran away from home

she made it to the south where she eventually found the southerners

she told them she wanted to help

it took them a long while b/f they trusted her, given who she was, but eventually they did

they told her that she would serve them best if she could gain information and send it back to them

she agreed and when she returned home, months later, she told her father that she had been kidnapped and seen how horrible the southerners really were!!!

from that moment on, she was, outwardly, the perfect daughter and loyal citizen but she was only gaining information from her father (who was completely taken in by her new act and suddenly his least favorite daughter became his favorite)

told her younger sisters everything and has their full support

she straight up forbade them from doing anything too dangerous to help, but would often employ them to lie about her whereabouts

(lina listened, but veronica did not #whoops)

even though she involved them as little as possible, still feared for her their safety

wanted to make plans to get them to the south, somehow, without putting any suspicions on her that she was any less loyal to the north

a few years ago her father passed away and with him, her connections

so she then agreed to marry victor crandon, vandon’s right hand, who had always shown an interest in her

always HATED him but pretended to have eventually fallen for his ~charms~ to get the ring on her finger

inquisitive, adventurous, curious!!

loves to learn but is more apt to retain information by doing, rather than in a book (caoimhe loves the library aesthetic but doesn't have the patience nor the attention span to actually sit down and read)

talks a mile a minute and is definitely known not to have a filter (which certainly has been stressing both her sisters now that rian stafford is at lorcan!)

not a fan of the varmonts and it shows (but secretly admires guinevere and cassandra's sense of fashion)

is the only person who knows about aisling and garbhan's secret love affair and originally it made her feel trusted to be guarding so important of a secret, but it's becoming clear that aisling is afraid that she will accidentally let it slip at the worst time possible (which, even caoimhe has to admit, is fair)

caoimhe at first thought the relationship was romantic but now she fears the aisling cares more for garbhan than he cares for her and she might get herself into trouble (caoimhe is not used to being the voice of reason!)

definitely has a mischievous streak and certainly didn't mind that the calleary family had to come live with them (she will suffer through cormac to have the constant company of the twins!)

however, caoimhe has been feeling a little neglected lately by nearly everyone she knows

eabha, aine, and laoise have their hands full monitoring lorcan and rian stafford, aisling is busy with garbhan, saoirse is always looking after the children, and finn and fiona don't seem to have as much time for their pranks as they once did and caoimhe isn't always invited anymore when they sneak out of the castle .... (even the insufferable cormac prefers cassimir's company to her own)

which makes her miss siobhan stafford all the more ...

caoimhe is convinced that both siobhan and her brother are still alive and it frustrates her that no one seems to be looking for them

caoimhe secretly has started her own plans to go and hunt for them -- convinced that she would know where to look

she knows her sisters would never allow for such a thing and although she once hoped fiona, brigit, rosie, or even finn would have once joined her, she isn't certain that they would now since everyone seems to have their own concerns and caoimhe isn't about to say anything to anyone who would give her away

caoimhe has been gathering what skills and supplies she feels she is certain to need, but she is much more underprepared for such an undertaking than she realizes

her strengths lie in her expert knowledge of the lands surrounding lorcan and malconaire (and in the random survival facts she's picked up) but she has so much more to learn about the world around her and striking out on her own would be far more disastrous than she realizes ...
