Book Review: BRAVE ENOUGH by Kati Gardner

Things would be tough enough in the Atlanta Ballet Conservatory without Cason’s instructor being her own mom...or a debilitating leg injury that threatens to ruin an important audition. But when that injury turns out to be something far worse-- an aggressive form of cancer-- Cason’s dance-oriented life tilts off balance. Meanwhile, cancer survivor Davis must reckon with another daunting disease. He’d like to believe his drug addiction is a thing of the past, but his daily struggle to stay sober proves increasingly difficult as his old dealer and ex-girlfriend keep resurfacing. Cason and Davis’s paths cross in the hospital, and an unlikely bond begins to grow. Despite all the change and uncertainty around each of them, Davis and Cason must be brave enough to create a new normal.

I completely adored this incredibly heartfelt and moving debut from my fellow Flux author and Electric 18, Kati Gardner. I had the privilege of hearing Kati speak at a book event in Atlanta, and the amazing amount of passion she has for this story really presents itself on every page of this book. The Georgia setting was wonderful, and her two main characters go through complex, nuanced reckonings with their respective diseases, while also realizing how their public perception has been altered. Overall, BRAVE ENOUGH is an extraordinary and compelling exploration of tough, timely topics.

A young adult coming of age and romance with cancer taking the mainstage, this was an enjoyable read. I found the friendships compelling and the feeling of parental pressure relatable. This is an own voices novel, and Garnder talks in her authors note about struggling to find hopeful books about kids who are cancer survivors.
