I received an advanced reader copy of The Companions from Gallery/Scout Press via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. The Companions by Katie M. Flynn is a story about the search for the place your heart will call home and the people you meet along the way. Lilac died years before the viruses caused the quarantines. Her consciousness was uploaded to a companion- a command driven, artificial intelligence being that provides companionship to the living. Gabe’s family died from the viruses- she’s been on her own since she was a small child. She’s a petty thief and also performs small tasks for adults. A doctor that is looking out for Gabe, introduces her to Lilac. Lilac can make her own decisions and has evolved beyond the programming of her companion body. Humans have deemed her dangerous, so she’s on the run. Even though it seems Lilac and Gabe have the same beliefs about companions, their lives take different paths. Eventually, Lilac and Gabe meet again, will their beliefs align or will they be at odds? I loved this book, though I found the storyline to be choppy. Regardless, this sci-fi story kept me entertained. The Companions will be available Tuesday, March 3, 2020.
