Serena had spent way too long pretending this wasn't technically their first real date.
Sure, they'd hung out before. Fought aliens together. Ordered takeout at 2 a.m. while arguing about whether Hawkeye trick arrows counted as cheating. But this was an actual date.
By the time Kate arrived, Serena was already waiting outside the rink, two pairs of skates rented and a cup of hot chocolate balanced in each hand. She looked up the second she spotted her, immediately breaking into a grin that she made absolutely no effort to hide.
"Hi." A beat. "So... I may have forgotten to ask one tiny detail."
She held out one of the cups.
"You actually know how to ice skate, right?"

Daniella Romanoff, a skilled warrior
Catherine Wilson, a dangerous mercenary
Hunter Fox-Jones, son of Poseidon
Kate stumbles upon Serenity while visiting her lands
They both are immediately intrigued by each other
When Kate returns to the Elven realm (DIFFERENT REALM THAN LAURYA, BY THE WAY. LAURYA IS OF THE HIGH ELVEN. THE WISE AND OLD ONES) they both promise to stay in contact through letters
Serenity makes half-assed excuses to visit Kate's Elven realm, and when she finally makes it she barely sees Kate around because Kate is busy on missions and journeys
They finally meet for a few hours unexpectedly
Kate is overjoyed
Riley is suspicious of what the hell his sister is doing (is she engaging in dark activities? Who knows) and finds her letters to Kate on her desk while Serenity is away
He remains calm about this and asks her who Kate is when Serenity returns (later than expected, mind you)
Serenity tells him that she might. Maybe. Perhaps. Could be. in love.
Riley hauls ass over to the Elven realm (unusual for his anti-social self) to meet Kate. She turns out to be relatively nice and he approves
Kate is making plans to return to Serenity's lands, but it's harder than it seems. Serenity and the rest of the humans may come and go as they please, but the Elves are a diminishing race. They become more and more wary of the younger ones, the new world. The immortal Elves do not understand Kate's hurry.
It becomes more difficult for their letters to go through. Desperate to stay in touch with each other, they hire Catherine Wilson to deliver their notes. She's quick. She's reliable. She's disguised.
But perhaps it's for the best. Perhaps it's not meant to be. After all, Serenity is human nobility, a great commander, courageous and clever and dangerous with a sword. She is the pinnacle of mankind's rise, and yet her life will be short and but a fleeting moment in Kate's slow and long one.
Kate is a formidable warrior, and one of a beautiful and skilled race. Serenity and Kate might not belong together.
Laurya and Daniella would beg to differ. They know how much Serenity loves her. And Laurya doesn't believe that Elves are any better than humans are.
Laurya tries to negotiate with the Elves to let Kate go. Let a marriage happen if that's what Serenity and Kate want. The negotiation doesn't work, but she does manage to open many minds of Elves and humans alike. Word spreads of a potential new kingdom, inhabited by both Elves and humans in harmony, led by the queens Serenity and Kate and their advisor Laurya. Built by Riley. Defended by Serenity, Kate, Catherine, and Daniella. The royals and the people together.
The Elves do not like this idea. Their realm becomes even more shut off.
But it doesn't stop Serenity. Catherine and Daniella are hired to retrieve Kate.
When they meet, they decide why not? Why not chase freedom?
Why not build their own kingdom?
