“On my way to the bus yesterday, I saw a skinny dog. The dog was hungry. He spied a cat. Dog started to chase the cat. Down the alley, through a puddle, through a house, Cat even jumped over a kettle-fire, and she was gone. I said, ‘Dog, what happened? You were so hungry, and your dinner got away.’ Dog said to me, ‘The problem is me. I was only running for a meal. That cat was running for her life.’”
(Excerpt from Queen of Katwe)
In life, we are often surrounded by dogs. We ourselves may even be dogs. Scavenging for food, we are hungry, willing to chase after our next meal, whatever it is that lies within, capable of satiating our deepest desires. The hunger is strong, but it is not enough. For in the end, this meal, our desires, escape us. Hunger alone was not enough to drive us to success.
Among these dogs, we may also find cats. Us cats are not simply running due to hunger. No, there is a much greater power driving our flight. Our dreams and desires are our life force. They are what keep us going day in and day out. Our lives depend on the success of this run.
When chasing after our dreams, hunger will never be enough. We must fight with every fiber of our being. We must fight as if life itself were on the line. Only then will we succeed.
I refuse to be the dog, motivated only by hunger. Instead, I will be a cat... What will you be?
