Inara raised her eyebrows, an expression that was utterly lost on the young woman who was more focused on the engine above her than anything else, but Kaylee had already continued on, saying, “Me an’ Simon, it’s nice, what we’ve got, if a bit awkward ‘cause he’s shy, but you and the captain—”

“There’s nothing between me and the captain,” Inara said mildly, but Kaylee’s snort made it clear that, for all of Inara’s extensive training as a Companion, that particular lie was blatantly obvious.

MCU/Firefly crossover, Darcy/Kaylee (for @bagofgroceries. I hope you don’t mind me sharing a snippet!))

Kaylee hadn't intentionally picked a seat that would allow her to watch Darcy as she worked, but somehow it had happened anyway.

Wash tipped himself sideways so he could follow Kaylee's line of sight, his shoulder casually bumping hers.

"She's got it bad for someone, don't she?" Wash murmured, nodding towards Darcy.

"Mmm," Kaylee agreed. "Can't figure who, though." A bubble of longing swelled in her chest, but she tried not to let it show on her face. If only it was her Darcy was lost in thought over.

"Could be Zoe," Wash suggested helpfully. "Everyone's got it bad for Zoe."

Kaylee shook her head. "Darcy only takes to menfolk, she told me so." The pang of longing grew stronger.

"Must be me, then," Wash said knowingly, smoothing a hand over his hair.

Inara's mouth quirked. "I hate to break it to you, but it's not you."

After shifting through his stuff for a bit, Jayne stomped up the ladder out of his bunk. “Which one a’ you ruttin’ hwen dan’s ‘s been in my stuff again!?” He shouted, before muttering, “Jayne only got one rule. Don’t touch my gorram stuff.” His heavy boots preceded his emergence into the dining room, still talking to himself. “Ask, then touch - if’n I give my say-so. Don’t just go touchin’ stuff’t ain’t yours. Ain’t no one got any kinda manners ‘board this ruttin’ boat?” All Jayne was looking for was his whetstone, which he’d most like left out last time he’d sharpened his blades.
