Problems with the S&S comic
The implausible secrecy of Ukano's role
This might be a hot take, but the idea that “no one really knows that Ukano is the leader of the New Ozai Society until Mai admits his involvement” makes no sense.
Mai was not the sole trusted ally in a position to divulge this information. It's commonly overlooked that Ty Lee knew.
How have I never seen posts questioning why Ty Lee omitted the whole "and Mai's dad/Master Ukano is the leader of the New Ozai Society"? There might be some posts that I've missed. Please link any found in the comments.
Anyways, I can understand why Mai, her mother, Auntie Mura, and heck even the Warden, if he knows, wouldn't mention this because they are family. Duh! And who knows, maybe her mum didn't want Mai telling people about her dad being an underground Ozai loyalist. So that's why Mai resorted to strictly foiling his plans since he's still a threat, only for her to be unable to bring herself to arrest her own father, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
But what does Ty Lee get out of also omitting this, that too for an entire month? Yes, she's Mai's best friend, but she's also a Kyoshi Warrior and has the means to inform Zuko.
Considering how critical Ty Lee is regarding Mai using Kei Lo. How is that in line with her staying quiet? Or relaying the whole message about the Big Plan, only to leave out the caveat of who the leader is?
Apparently, Ty Lee played along with keeping it a secret for an entire month. And that plot point is abandoned after Part One. It's almost as if to make it seem that Mai is the sole ally of Zuko, who knew.
Mai letting her father get away doesn't mean there is no way of tracing his involvement in the New Ozai Society back to him.
For one, his followers surrendered. Wouldn't it be standard to assume that, because of that, said followers are likely to cooperate during an interrogation and spill the beans on Ukano?
And it begs the questions of why Zuko apparently didn't think to ask Mai, Kei Lo or hecks the Kyoshi Warriors especially Ty Lee what they know about the New Ozai Society? And vice versa.
Kei Lo is a known former member. Mai got information from him and informed Ty Lee, which led the Kyoshi Warriors to send him a message and coordinate action with Zuko. It's clear as day.
Yet, there's no mention of any immediate or direct questioning regarding the New Ozai Society. A lot could have been avoided if such questioning had indeed occurred.
What's the deal? Is there no investigation? Did Zuko believe that the New Ozai Society wouldn't be a problem in the future? Did he just ship those followers to prison, not bothering to track down the other members? Huh?
Okay, this confuses me. If Kei Lo wants Ukano arrested, then why did he sit on this for an entire month? Seriously, this comic follows a trend of characters sitting on important things for a month!
How did they not seem to react or even hear Mai implying that her dad is involved.
Maybe she was whispering?
Okay, the best point for last!
The Name Is A Dead Giveaway!
Does it ring a bell?
The New Ozai Society is clearly named after not just Ozai, but "the City of New Ozai", the Fire Nation's name for Omashu during their subjugation.
When we first meet Ukano in the series, he's appointed Fire Nation governor of Omashu (later renamed New Ozai), and according to Avatar Extras, "the mastermind behind the invasion of Omashu."
That name alone should have warranted Ukano as a prime suspect of involvement. An Ozai loyalist organisation conveniently named after both the deposed Fire Lord and Omashu's Fire Nation name. That's not easy to write off as a coincidence; it's a walking red flag.
Are there any posts pointing out how laughable and mind-numbingly stupid this plot hole is? Please link them below.
Still related but kinda unrelated: YOU GUYS keep whining about the worst canon ship being Sukka, or Makorra, Korrasami, etc.
BUT none of you would ever mention the comic canon ships with show characters. Like, there are no Melina/Hakoda fans, no Ursa/Noren, and I bet my ass off that no one GENUINELY likes Mai/Kei Lo. Because I SWEAR these are the blandest, most uninteresting, plot convinient ships in existence.
Even more, my hottest take on this is that most of them are a pity pairing. Mostly calling out Ursa and Hakoda's case bc "oh no! These very traumatized parents that reconnect with their families need to be happy at last, so let's give them boring, nothing burger hetero partners! Because they SURE AS HELL need a partner to reach true happiness and stability!!!". But also Mai's sort of bc of all the writing shit and poor relationship drama. Hers is a more plot convenient one.
(btw pls tell me if any of these have a ship name bc they all honestly sound like ass so I'm putting the "/" just in case)
X
I think kei lo x ty lee would have a high potential for a ship, I like when ty lee was defensive of him and continues believing that "he has a good aura" despite knowing what he did and both of them have a similar name structure which would make their ship name kei lee or ty lo, and I could say ty lee could relate to him knowing how its like to be manipulated by a high power figure (since kei lo was by manipulated by mai's father), overall I just think they would be cute together
Was Kei Lo manipulated by Mai's father? I recall that Kei Lo just signed up for a racist terrorist organization because he didn't have anyone else to hang out with, and he was basically on board with everything they were doing until he realized it wasn't a good way to meet girls. The only real manipulation was when Mai's dad realized that Kei Lo was a traitor and fed him false info, but arguably Kei Lo was the one who started it by leaking info in the first place.
Although, the initial manipulator in that specific scenario is Mai herself, doing the whole Honeypot thing. But does it still count if she made a good-faith effort after the fact to date the guy?
But if we look at Kei Lo's whole history, Mai's off the hook, because he technically manipulated her first by asking her out, charming her, and then luring her to a remote location where a racist terrorist organization could kidnap her. If he actually thinks she'd want to date him after that, I think he's kind of fooling himself.
Hm, it feels like we're building a scenario where Ty Lee starts dating the guy only to realize that she's in the clutches of another controlling, lying figure, but he's much less effective than Azula and she can turn the situation around on him with a little effort. Kei Lo thinks he's in charge of the relationship, but slowly comes to realize he's a house-husband who never leaves the house, has no connections besides Ty Lee, and is basically a live-in servant. He even got guilted into letting her date other people.
I'm sorry, your Ty Lo idea is cute and I have nothing against it, but I just kind of see Kei Lo as a pathetic villain so all my talks about him go in this direction. XD
Hey! If you are still looking for maiko prompts.
You could write a sour zuko finding out that Mai and kei lo broke up. I like imagining ways for him to find out and what his reaction would be.
And I’m always a fan of stories where Mai runs away when zuko is banished, or try to smuggle herself into his ship.
Anyway, have fun!
Put a Ring on It
Part 2 is out now: read it here.
Summary: Kei Lo buys an engagement ring. Zuko freaks out.
“I’m thinking something gold and traditional.” Good, Zuko thought bitterly. At least Mai will hate it. He had well and truly lost her. He had lost her to another man.
Author’s Note: This idea was given to me by a lovely anon! If you have any Maiko fic ideas that you want me to write, send them my way! And thank you, if you already have <3
Gene Luen Yang wants me to believe it took Mai and Zuko 3 years to get back together. Ha! I spit in your face, good sir. This fic will do it in one! (I’m kidding, I’m kidding… mostly. I hate the comics but I’m sure Gene’s a decent fellow.)
This fic takes place 8 months after the events of Smoke and Shadow, vol 3. It’s canon compliant up to that point, and canon compliant with Korra, but I know nothing about the comics that chronologically happen in between so it might contradict those. For the purpose of this fanfiction, marriage proposals in the Fire Nation are the same as modern proposals with an engagement ring.
Also! Happy (late) Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! You’re the best!!
Zuko made his way quickly through the rain, hood pulled tight over his head. He was out with only a few plainclothes guards today, hoping to maintain some anonymity. It was only a week until the Feast of the Mother of Faces, and Zuko had yet to find a suitable gift for his own mom. He wanted to get her something especially nice since they had been apart for so many years. He was pretty sure his last gift to her was a macaroni necklace, and figured he had to at least up his game from that.
His uncle had given him some recommendations of places to shop, and the first of which was a small but well-known jewelry store in the Caldera. As he slipped inside, he noted that the place was nearly empty except for the store clerk. His guards would be watching the door from a tavern across the street, and were instructed not to check in unless he spent over an hour in the building.
