Well shit.

Because I’m Jewish, and I like his writing.  And I still like it.  The writing didn’t change.

But now I have to have, like, feelings about who he was as a person?  Which, him being dead, doesn’t really affect much, but is unavoidable.

I sort of want to say “I wish you just hadn’t told me that,” but no, I mean, these things should be out there and not secrets.

I just don’t know where to put this information and it’s frustrating.

When I assumed it was my fault for being too difficult of a child, it sucked but I could kind of deal with it and just accept my inferiority and too-muchness as a person. When he had a mental breakdown and got diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (which I, doing a Master’s degree in psychology, would NEVER have predicted; he’s a covert/hypervigilant narcissist), it was at once more painful and more freeing.

Because I realized that literally, there was N O T H I N G I could have done as a child to make him love me the way I needed. And that breaks my heart in ways too deep to express, but lets me know that his reactions aren’t things I can model my future chances of being loved on.
