Kenny Sharp presents: Virginia Slim

We need more music like this to chill, to calm, and think.

Sharp’s favorite song of the upcoming project Gold Rush (Feb 7) is a simple ode to his home state Virginia. It was inspired by a new love interest that calls the state home as well.

Over a classic jazzy blues progression that recalls Ray Charles, Sharp uses metaphor and imagery to paint the picture of a place diverse as it is beautiful. Sharp was raised in Northern Virginia (Alexandria), went to college in the Blue Ridge Mountains (Lexington), and regularly worked side jobs in the Tidewater to pay for early studio time. As a military brat that frequently moved around in his youth, Virginia is the only place he kept coming back to and the only place that feels like home.

Kenny Sharp's Brown Liquor Music is not just a soul-defined music experience; it's a journey that elevates pop-ready funk from a genre to a vibe that resonates with people from all walks of life. The frontman, signed to Prescription Songs as a songwriter by his mentor, LunchMoney Lewis, has evolved from a conscious-minded rapper to a crooning and strutting performer gifted with a universally appealing James Brown and Morris Day style of entertainment. As a native of the Washington, D.C. area, Sharp's work is guided by that scene's multi-genre link between soul, rock, R&B, funk, and hip-hop. 

A growing catalog of Kenny’s original songs, including "Renege," "The Louvre" and "The Breeze,” showcases how he’s inspired the band's unique lyrical and musical arrangements and created a style Sharp describes as a “Brown Liquor Music.”

 In 2021, Citizen Cope invited Kenny to open for him at multiple shows at NYC's City Winery. Also in 2021, Kenny caught the attention of former President Barack Obama, who listed song "Witchoo" as one of his favorite tracks of the year. The song, co-written by Kenny with Durand Jones and the Indications, is a testament to Kenny's songwriting prowess and his ability to craft unforgettable melodies. 

In 2024 Kenny had his song “The Louvre” hit over a million streams and won Nashville’s Lightning 100’s coveted Music City Mayhem 2024, where he battled 32 contestants (all chosen by a panel of judges, who listened to more than 300 artists/bands for final selections) in three rounds to make it to the competition's Final Four, then earned the champion title following his live performance at the Music City Mayhem Finale show.
