You're right, anon, we don't know anything about the war between the Ferngill Republic and the Gotoro Empire. We do know, however, that he joined the war willingly, because there's no mention anywhere in the game of any kind of draft. So depending on the way you interpret the war really affects my opinion of Kent. Either he was called to defend his country from being invaded by a malicious, or he left to go murder innocents in a foreign country. We don't know why he left. But we do know that the Gerngill Republic is vaguely based on the USA, so we know which answer is more likely, don't we?
Sure, I'm sympathetic to the fact that he was held as a POW, and his PTSD, and rather think no one is at fault in the popcorn scene. The popcorn scene did not change my opinion on him. The fact that he has PTSD down not negate from the possibility that he leapt at the chance to murder The Enemy(TM) for a paycheck. I don't go out of my way to hate on Kent, mind you, I'm neutral to him specifically because of the ambiguity. But the level of rage aimed at people who really have very good reasons for disliking him is disproportionate.
