alright everyone, this year im absolutely deadAFass Serious about it........ but im doing nanowrimo IM DOING IT, IM GONNA MAKE IT HAPPEN so please feel free to HARASS ME about it as much as humanly possible!!!!!!! so. im going to focus on my 'scifi' retelling of beauty and the beast.... appropriately named beauty & the byte (ps: @beautyandthebyte 👀). here's the synopsis i posted on nanowrimo, which simultaneously sounds absolutely familiar and utterly stupid all at the same time:
Some years into the future, but not many, in a nearby city, there was a young man lived in a shining building. Although he had everything his heart desired, the man was spoiled, selfish, and unkind. But then, one winter's night, an old friend who was down on her luck, came to his apartment and offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold. Repulsed by her haggard appearance, the man sneered at the gift and turned his old friend away, but she warned him not to be deceived by appearances, for beauty can still be found within. And when he dismissed her again, the old friend's ugliness melted away to reveal that she was still a beautiful enchantress. The man tried to apologize, but it was too late, for she had seen that there was still no love in his heart, and as punishment, she transformed him into a hideous robotic being, and placed a powerful spell on the apartment building, and all who lived there. Ashamed of his new metal form, the robot concealed himself inside his apartment, with the internet as his only window to the outside world. However, the rose she had offered was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his twenty-fifth year. If he could learn to love another, and earn their love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a robot for all time. As the years passed, he fell into despair, and lost all hope, for who could ever learn to love a robot?

• One night you're driving past the meadowlands. You hear music playing, but at 2 in the morning it can't possibly be from the stadium. You swear it's coming from within the wetlands. You're not sure why it begins to sound like the Karz 4 Kidz jingle. • "We don't go under the boardwalk," your mother says. Her grip on your hand gets tighter. She remembers something she'd like to forget. Didn't you once have another sibling? "We don't look under the boardwalk," she says again, in a whisper. You think you see something under the boardwalk. You forget what you see. • 1738 • You see a photo of a diner that feels intimately familiar. In fact, you know that diner very well. You have never been to that diner in your life. • On some nights, you dream about diners in other spaces, places, and time. • "Under Construction" the sign reads. Everything is always under construction. "It's always been under construction," your father says, wearily, remembering the same signs from his youth. You begin to wonder when the construction will be finished. Deep in your heart, you know the answer will be "never". • Nobody ever talks about it, but you know that the Sanzari pact has been sealed with blood. • Your out-of-state friends think that the myth regarding Jimmy Hoffa being buried under the old stadium was debunked. But you know the truth, as does your grandfather. He was there when they made the sacrifice, after all. • You take a wrong turn. "Welcome to New York State" a sign cheerily informs you. You make a u-turn. "Welcome to the Empire State" another sign says. You make a u-turn. "Welcome to New York State" a completely different sign says. You make a u-turn. • You still remember when crossing the GWB took tokens. You remember when they started using the EZ-Pass. You remember all the griping from toll hikes. 15$ to cross into your homeland doesn't seem do bad now, compared to the pound of flesh the Port Authority insists on taking every time. • You think about taking the ferry. You briefly forget that they are not resposible for anything lurking within the depths of the Hudson, waiting to snatch you offboard. • You know the jersey devil doesn't come up north past the Raritan. "This is the north," you say, with enough steel and stern to rival any capo, "and you are not welcome here." Still, he shows teeth (a smile, you falsely think), and advances. You repeat your words, but they have no effect. You run to go get your grandmother's treasured baseball bat. • You stare at the paper before you. "Do you fear death or God?" it asks. You check off a box labeled "no". An instructor appears beside you, their face obscured by the shadows. "Congratulations," they say, as they hand you your driver's license, "You're ready".
So I found some "build your character" bio things so w/e I'm gonna do 'em for Ginna and Patrick. Under a cut to save eyeballs/dash space.
Description of family - Ginna and Patrick are both adopted. Ginna's biological parents (Birkir and Hrafnlaug) are from Iceland, Patrick's biological parents (Werknesh, father unknown) are from Ethiopia. Mrs. McGuiness (English-Lebanese) is the godmother of Ginna, and after her parents died, took her in as a daughter. She and her husband (Mr. McGuiness, American with mostly Irish ancestry) decided they wanted a son too, and was able to adopt Patrick through an agency.
Date of birth - Ginna is September 9th. Patrick is March 10th.
Place of birth - Ginna was born in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland. Patrick was born in Gondar, Ethiopia.
Location changes - UHH WELL. They live in Angora, NJ. Angora is based off of Alpine (also in NJ), in terms of demographics, location, and generally... everything. It might as well be the same town lol
Interests - Ginna likes smoking, eating junk food, stargazing (which is surprisingly poetic for her), walking aimlessly, watching tv, and playing video games. Patrick is into social media, tech, fashion, music, and programming. He has multiple blogs on tumblr, each one curating something different (ghost/weirdness sightings, which also gets automatically posted to his secondary twitter ; tech-meets-fashion ; retrowave/retrofuture/vaporwave aesthetics ; programming projects and app ideas).
Talents - Ginna's talents lie in punching, paranormal lore, solving mysteries, and local history. Patrick's talents lie in highbrow goss, interior decoration, color theory, math, physics, and programming.
Legal trouble - Mr. McGuiness works for a shadowy organization that sells things to the government. The man is a billionaire and counting. The meaning of "legal troubles" is unknown to this family.
Ginna's gotten into trouble in the past for vandalism, theft, destruction of property, assault, arson, and trespassing, just to name a few. Patrick is the golden child who generally stays out of trouble.
Educational experiences - Patrick is a senior at a technical high school (modeled off the BCA Tech school system, but obvs a bit different), and is planning on going to college to get a degree in Computer Science with a focus on game development and iOS app development. Ginna barely made it through high school, but surprised everyone when she announced that she'd be applying to college for a degree in Game Testing. She then dropped out of community college... to the surprise of no one (tho Patrick told her she'd hate doing GAM courses and she should have gone for History instead... she wishes she'd listen to him, but is too proud to go back).
Work experiences - Patrick gets a mysterious job during the course of the story, ergo I cannot elaborate ;) Ginna works a night shift as a ghost puncher/paranormal investigator and general watcher over the dead/undead. When people ask, she just tells them she works in the "funerary services business".
Athletic achievements - Neither of them are very athletic. :B
Influences - Ginna: Ghostbusters, surrealism, and video games. Patrick: Cyberculture, fashion, and minimalism.
Political activism - Ginna does not care in the slightest and at the age of 19, is still not registered to vote. Patrick can't wait to turn 18 so he can start to vote.
Friends - Ginna's two friends are Patrick and Harry. Patrick has many friends from his school (and online), but due to the ghosthunting biz... he tends to not invite them over to his house.
Romantic relationships / marriage - Ginna thinks romance is awkward and that sex is disgusting. Don't even ask about marriage. Patrick is a big flirt but is also verrry loyal to whomever he's dating. He thinks the idea of marriage is nice, but not necessary to start a family.
Awards - Ginna... no. Patrick's won a few scholastic competitions in science and design.
Failures - Patrick doesn't know much about failure except in terms of romance and lines of code that don't make sense. Ginna ignores her failures.
Tragedies and difficulties - Both have lost their biological parents and each feels a different way because of it. Ginna never knew her parents and sometimes feels jealous that Patrick at least has a memory of his mother. She also gets mad at him for acting like as if the McGuinesses are his real parents. Patrick on the other hand, is grateful to have been adopted and works to please the McGuinesses in the way that any child would wish to please their parents. He misses his mother, and works hard for her memory as well.
Controversies - Ginna's anger issues and tendency to speak her mind definitely causes offense. Patrick sometimes feels strange because he doesn't care much to "reconnect" with his heritage and just wants to chill and live life. He knows that he's privileged in that sense but doesn't dwell on it.
Name changes - Ginna was born as Reginbjörg Marý Birkisdóttir. Her surname was changed to McGuiness upon adoption. Having an odd first name led to her having A MILLION WEIRD nicknames, all of which she despises (Reggie, Regina, Reg, Bjorg, Jorgie, Georgia, Gina). The nickname “Ginna” was given to her by Blindeye… in turn, he goes by a thousand other names, but the one he gave to Ginna to know him by was “Ginnar”. All of this is important stuff, so I hope you’re taking notes!!!!
Patrick was born as Abba Werknesh, but his name was changed to Patrick Abba McGuiness upon adoption. Mr. McGuiness thought he'd be made fun of for his first name, so it was changed to something average that was also still reminiscent of religion.
Clubs and organizations - Ginna doesn't care. Patrick dabbles in whatever after-school activities he thinks is fun.
What kind of car do they drive? - Ginna doesn't drive due to past trauma- she can barely even stand sitting in the front seat. Patrick drives a Chevy Camaro IROC-Z (3rd gen) that used to belong to Mr. McGuiness.
Do they keep it clean or is it messy? - Patrick's car is his baby, so yes. He keeps it quite religiously clean and well-maintained.
What, if anything, do they listen to on the radio? - Anything chill or with a good beat. Sometimes vaporwave or future funk.
Are they the sort of person that fiddles with the radio as they drive, never satisfied with what they are listening to? - Nah.
Are they the sort of person who puts on makeup or shaves while they drive? - Patrick does it at stop lights.
Do they talk on the phone as they drive? - Nope.
Do they get upset with other drivers? - Patrick is too chill to get road rage. Ginna, due to a traumatic experience in the past, gets incredibly anxious when she's in a car. This anxiety manifests into anger, aggression, and backseat driving.
Do they tailgate? - Nope.
Are they careful or nervous drivers? - Careful.
Do they plan their day as they drive? - Patrick might, but I see him as someone too organized to 'space out' while driving. Maybe if he was sitting in traffic without realizing it (but also, he tends to use apps like Waze to not get caught in traffic).
Do they speed or run red lights? - Nope. Though Patrick speeds through yellow lights... he'd only run a red if it was an emergency.
friendly reminder that today doesnt really exist. everything that happens on a leap day will only ever stay as a lost memory in your mind. even if you do remember, when you try to tell people what happened, you'll instantly forget and it'll only remain as something on the tip-of-your-tongue. dont try to fight this- doing so might unravel time.
Principal McCorkle doesn’t approve of his little princess seeing ‘that goddamn troublemaking Pines boy’ and eventually just straight-out forbids her from dating him anymore. He even goes out of his way to make sure they don’t have any classes together… and warns the other teachers to make sure Carla and Stan aren’t near each other at lunch or in the hallways. But they have phones at home. When Ma isn’t using the phone (usually after 7pm), that’s when Carla calls Stan. They spend hours like this: going on “phone dates”. One day, the principal catches Carla while she’s on a phone date. He’s genuinely afraid of offending the Pines family: if they took Ford out of his school, it’d look bad for him. He needs their little genius, after all. So he forbids her from using the phone ever again, and even begins to consider sending her off to an all-girls school in a different town instead. >Carla, why won’t you call me?

I think about this quote a lot for all forms of media, tbh. 23. What’s your favorite & least favorite part of making characters?Favorite: doing the research! If you could write the next book of any series, which one would it be, and what would you make the book about?My initial thought was "Harry Potter"! But I'd have to reread the whole series + read the supplemental books (which I never have) to be as accurate as possible. I'd also have to understand the nuances of the British wizarding world lmao.... like, wtf even is a treacle tart????? I assume it's a dessert, maybe like a fruit tart? Is a treacle a sort of fruit? A pudding? Like, doing a book featuring the Salem Witches Institute would be the bomb dot com, but haven't we got enough books that feature Salem? So it would be cool if maybe we could get an urban setting + diverse styles of American magic. European magic uses spells with roots in the Greek and Latin, but American magic is so full of diverse styles, you could very easily write another 7 books. The problem is keeping it authentic ;) But then, why have one author do it... a project like that ought to be an anthology! Thanks for the questions!
