The books say creating stronger/boss Unversed is agonizing, and he "vomits" them up.

In my mind, they start out larval, small. Like grubs. He rapidly overheats in the process because making one hurts so much he immediately makes another, and the cycle goes until he passes out.

Once he passes out, he pulls what he's made closer so they don't get damaged, and make his pain worthless.

(pure headcanon) smaller unversed, runts, stick close to him, weaker and frailer, but rarely last very long. Still, they guard him in these times.
