Tolkien Dwarf Week 2024

Hi everyone!

Tolkien Dwarf Week will take place on October 7 – 13, 2024. All types of work you want to create are welcome: fanfiction, fanart, meta, music, moodboards, calligraphy, translations, transcriptions, rec lists… you name it!

The aim of this event is to show the underappreciated dwarves in Tolkien’s legendarium some love. (So while I probably won’t be outright excluding works about Thorin, Fíli, and Kíli, focussing on them is not the aim of this event, sorry.)

Below the cut are the schedule and some additional optional prompts to get your mental forges glowing. If you have other ideas that don’t fit into the schedule, no problem! Just post them on whatever day fits for you.

If you are a bit late in posting, don’t worry: I will continue checking the tag regularly for at least a week after the event has officially ended, and probably a bit less regularly after that.

My favorite thing about The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings fandom is fans use of the term “Dwarrow.”

Like when we have a POV that’s not a dwarf, we have them use “dwarves,” but when we have a dwarf using common it’s “dwarrows” and better yet in the narrative from the POV of a dwarf a lot of people use “khazad” from the dwarves private language Khuzdul.

So this leads to needing an in verse explanation.

But all I can imagine is some haughty dwarf lord being all put out because no one in Middle-earth will call them their name from their maker (being Khazad) so he goes around being pedantic about Common Tongue grammar like, “actually it’s based in the root word xx so it would be ‘dwarrows’ not ‘dwarves’” but also silently seething.

But also like, Dwarf Friends would call them “dwarrow.” Like, Bilbo and Legolas and Celebrimbor would call dwarves “dwarrow” but also Know they had a word for themselves and use it in private.
