Nevervember Day 1: A Typical Day
"By the gods, Fain! What in the hells happened outside?"
"Bandits," replied Fain casually, picking his teeth.
Duncan's arms fell to his sides and his fists curled. "I can bloody well see that! What kind of hornet's nest in the docks did you stir up this time?"
Fain's eyebrows rose and he made an exaggerated frown, shrugging. The bard placed his arm over the top of his chair's backrest and allowed his gloved hand to dangle there behind him, and half-turned in his seat to peer with only slight performative concern over his shoulder out the window.
The gore and bodies on the street remained in full display. Shocked citizens edged around the mess, hands to their mouths, or else hurried past with their eyes glued to the ground lest they be stopped for questioning.
Fain returned his attention to Duncan beside him and batted his eyelashes. "I just have that effect on people."
"You're as bad as Qara," moaned the half-elf barkeeper. "It's like you wake up every day determined to find new ways to test Tyr's patience!"
Fain frowned slightly again, both eyebrows tilted upwards creating creases on his forehead. Again his expression reflected a certain unflappability in his fey demeanor. "And Moire's lackeys and luskan thugs keep finding new ways to test my patience. Tyr and I might as well talk over tea at some point and get to know each other." He sniffed and crossed one leg over the other while he reclined in his chair.
"Ha! As long as they keep sendin' them, we'll keep killin' them!" cheered Khelgar from the bar. "The docks won't lose one bit o' sleep over the loss of a few criminals."
"Besides," Neeshka chimed in from nearby, having crept up so silently she nearly scared Duncan shitless when she spoke, "there's less to join Leldon's crew. He'll be begging for recruits at this rate!"
Fain grinned, thoroughly convinced of his own charm. "See? Look. I'm a good Samaritan. I'm behaving."
Duncan ran his palm from his forehead down his face so he could sigh into his palm, eyes closed wearily. "The least you can do is clean that mess outside up. At this rate your 'good behavior' is driving away more customers than Bishop."
"What's that?" drawled Bishop, haunting his usual corner of the bar. "I didn't quite catch that, old man."
Duncan narrowed his eyes over his shoulder at the ranger. "Oh, I'll give you something to catch, all right! Go and drink your beer, this is between me and my kin."
Qara, cleaning a table just behind Duncan, caught Fain's eye and snickered at the show. This time, at least, she wasn't the brunt of the fiery half-elf's frustration, and this was all very amusing to her.
Fain tilted his head to peer past his uncle and gave Qara a fey grin. She rolled her eyes at him in an exaggerated fashion, and right before she turned away from him he could swear she was smiling too.
