Kilchoman Whisky Maury Cask Matured Limited Edition 2026

In March 2026, the Islay distillery Kilchoman released the Kilchoman Maury Cask Matured Limited Edition 2026 – a genuine first and a highlight for Islay whisky enthusiasts.

What makes this bottling special is that it is not merely a short finishing period (secondary maturation), but a full-term maturation. The single malt spent its entire maturation period in casks that had previously held Maury, a naturally sweet French fortified wine.

What is Maury, and why is it so exciting?

Maury is a protected naturally sweet fortified wine (Vin Doux Naturel) from the Roussillon region in southern France, produced primarily from Grenache Noir grapes. In terms of flavour, it is reminiscent of a full-bodied Port, but often offers even more intense dark fruit notes and subtle oxidative spice.

In the world of whisky, Maury casks are extremely rare. According to Kilchoman founder Anthony Wills, these powerful casks can be challenging to work with, but when handled skilfully, they produce exceptionally deep and complex whiskies.

Tonight I waive the traditional horror movie in lieu of the 1963 classic McLintock! starring the incomparable John Wayne. A favorite of mine for sure. It is one of the movies that also features his son Patrick Wayne. I am also sampling a whisky unknown to me, Kilchoman Machir Bay. Pale straw in color, the nose hit me strong with peaty smokiness, but this quickly faded as I went back for more. A very mellow, pleasant nose overall. After a third or fourth nosing, I drew the first taste and was incredibly surprised at the mellow, honey-like mouth feel. Unexpected for sure. I took a few chews of the spirit to distribute evenly followed by a smooth swallow. I was still coming down from the heavenly experience as the whisky let me know it wasn't finished with its tricks. Smokey smooth honey turned warm and rose to a warm flavorful finish that not only lingered, but built as it waved goodbye. I am so pleased with this purchase. I rated it 78 of 100 on my personal scale ranking it #1.

At $68 this is an incredible buy. Die hard Islay drinkers will put this whisky down claiming it lacks character. I would disagree due to its drinkable nature. I highly recommend this whisky if someone wanted to explore Islay whiskys for the first time. Are there peated whiskys with more character? Absolutely, but this is such a balanced, smooth drink, it would gently coerce non-Islay drinkers to reconsider.

The nose is candy....peach rings come to mind. The first sip is brine followed by sweetness with a smoky finish. Returning to the nose, the candy is gone, replaced by peatiness and a briney tail-end. This isn't the dessert that is the 2018 Port Matured, however it is a sweet treat. This time I got the full bottle of the Sanaig from Kilchoman. Founded in 2005, Kilchoman Farm Distillery, pronounced "Kil-ho-man" is on the west coast of Islay and is one of the smallest in Scotland. Named after the most spectacular beach in Islay, Machir Bay represents the flagship of Kilchoman Distillery. . Kilchoman Sanaig is a unique and non chilled filtered whisky, being aged in bourbon barrels and ex-sherry Hogsheads barrels that totally change its color and character. The texture of the content has a hue of the color of beech wood; the aroma is delicate, with notes of ripe fruit combined with caramel and vanilla, and the taste is sweet and surprises with aromas of caramel, peat and citrus smoke. The finish is balanced, with hints of fruit and peat smoke. . This is a very good Islay whisky. Quite popular with peated whisky fans 🙂. .
