Not really a headcannon ig but you should 100% watch the Mad Max and Blade Runner movies if you want like killjoy-adjacent stuff cause it’s so easy to see where some of the inspiration came from and it’s really cool. They’re just cool movies on their own too. ALSO Repo Man (1984), which is another fun movie, reminds me a lot of killjoys: national anthem

I think read somewhere I think Gerard was really into Mad Max so I def have to check them out!! I haven’t gotten a chance to read national anthem yet either because I haven’t been able to get my hands on a copy but it’s on the list as well!! Thank you for the recs! <3

So I found the hardcover copy of Killjoys California at a Barnes and Noble so naturally I had to buy it.

I’m flipping through a bit just to look at some of the artwork and:

Val laid on the worn mattress he always slept on, it was placed in one of the corners of a former storage room in the nest. But something felt off. His bed was unusually empty, even though he was the only one sleeping in it. The red blanket was cold, his pillow had an unusual amount of space, the empty space next to him felt like a hole that could only be covered by someone else’s embrace. He knew that Volume and the twins slept in a big platonic pile in the living room, but their touch wouldn’t be the right one.

The door that led to the cold desert night slammed shut. Familiar footsteps echoed through the nest. Vinyl was home, home from a late night drive. One of the drives that he took when he didn’t feel alone enough. Val heard Volume’s welcoming whisper, he knew that Vinyl gave them the same little wave he always gave people before taking off his boots. 

Vinyl entered the small room where Val was trying to fall asleep. With a silent grunt he sat down on the cold concrete floor next to the mattress. 

“Hm,” Val sighed and reached out from under the crimson blanket for Vinyl’s hand, “Come here.” Vinyl leaned over Val, admiring every detail of his unmasked face. Val gave him a tired glare and pulled him down, down closer to his own body. 

“Oh.” Vinyl mouthed. He got up quickly and went into the other room. Not that long after he was back, wearing more comfortable clothes. 

Vinyl slowly laid down on the mattress next to Val. Val threw the now warmer blanket over him. 

“How was your drive, my love?” Val asked with a voice softer than sand. He knew that affectionate nicknames made Vinyl flustered, but he knew he loved them. 

“Cold,” he said shortly, “and relaxing.” He cupped Val’s face, and let his thumb wander across his stubble. Val looked at him with love in his eyes. A small grin grew across Val’s lips as he rested his face on Vinyl’s chest. He loved Vinyl so much, he wouldn’t be able to survive without him. 

“What?” Vinyl chuckled with a quiet tone, Val could feel the vibrations in his ribcage like a song with a heavy bass.

“You’re like a piece of art, I can’t pull my eyes off of you.” Val whispered into Vinyl’s firm chest. With dry but warm lips he softly kissed Viny’s collar bones. 

“Darling, if I’m a piece of art then you’re hand-crafted by nymphs.” Vinyl added to the admiration. He fidgeted with Val’s somehow soft hair, it was as if the stars themselves had brushed his hair. Val melted into the warm touch of Vinyl’s hand. 

And before sleep wrapped around them like a blanket weaved out of the finest melatonin they whispered “I love you” to each other. There they laid next to each other being the two men as beautiful as the moon. Finally that hole in Val’s bed was filled, and Vinyl got to see his beloved being soft as sand.

I really liked this drawing of Val Velocity from The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys comic and decided to draw it in my style! The hair was so much fun to draw and it was great practice with lighting. Also I don’t know why I waited til now to read the comic that came after the My Chemical Romance Danger Days album but I loved reading it and the art is amazing!
