Limo Wreck by Soundgarden is an underrated song. Why don’t more people mention it?

(BTW, right around the corner from this is the former Raison d'Etre, where Andy, Stone and Jeff used to work. It's in the same building, as a matter of fact. And next door is the Oxford Arms, where a very young Jeff Ament once lived, fifth floor.)

Discovery Park is Seattle’s largest city park, 535 acres projecting out into Elliot Bay and the Sound. It’s also where a LOT of our guys hung out, roamed in the woods, and sometimes used for photoshoots and videos.

The lighthouse on the western spur turns up in the video for Temple of the Dog’s ‘Hunger Strike’, Soundgarden runs around through the woods in the ‘Rusty Cage’ video, and now here.

First pic, taken late fall or early winter 1988, by the shadows late in the afternoon. Chris Cornell and Kim Thayll on the beach posing with some opportune driftwood. Chris is staring back toward the city of Seattle, and from this beach it’s entirely possible with the tilt of his head that he’s looking at the Space Needle, which would be visible from here.

Third pic, google maps, roughly by the hills and land spur in the distance, the same spot today.

Fourth pic, spinning the google maps camera around 180 shows us that yes, thirty years have gone by but the driftwood STILL piles up on this beach in particular.

I’ll be heading out here next time I’m in Seattle, I promise. Have a few places to get to, this is one of them.

Kim A. Thayil is an American musician best known as the lead guitarist of the Seattle-based rock band Soundgarden, which he cofounded with singer Chris Cornell and bassist Hiro Yamamoto in 1984.
