Darby O’Gill
The titular character of the oft ignored and forgotten (and totally bizarre) 1959 film Darby O’Gill and the Little People. The film followed Darby as he tried to trick three wishes out of some leprechauns and is rather dated and full of stereotypes.
Darby lives with his daughter, Katie in rural Ireland, spending most of his time in the local pub. Darby is his town’s expert on Irish folklore and frequently tells stories about leprechauns to his friends. While his daughter was busy in a romance with Michael McBride, Darby loses his job to Michael and is captured by leprechauns. He manages to capture the king leprechaun by beating him in a drinking competition and agrees to free the king in exchange for three wishes. His first wish was that the leprechaun king stay with him for two weeks while he figures out his next two wishes. His second wish is wasted. His third wish was going to be that his daughter Katie is happy romantically (which she is with Michael), until Katie has an accident and is near death. Darby decides to use his last wish to trade his life for hers. The leprechaun king tricks Darby into making one more wish, which negates all his previous wishes and saves the life of both him and his daughter Katie, who is free to marry Michael.
Darby O’Gill has not appeared since.
