okay so we know xaden killed one of king tauri's sons (halden's twin/aaric's brother) alic in basgiath and specifically at threshing because he "was a bully" and "went after garrick". what's really interesting about this though is
aaric doesn't just know it was xaden, his exact words to violet are "you have no idea what he did to alic!" and xaden's are "though i wonder who it was that told aaric, since if his father knew i highly doubt i’d still be in possession of my head."
from this wording i'd infer the issue wasn't that alic was killed during threshing (which is allowed, it's free season), it was the fact that xaden of all people killed him, and it sounds like it wasn't pretty
when violet and dain recognize aaric at conscription day, violet guesses if the king had known what aaric was planning, he wouldn't have let him go precisely bcuz of what happened to alic. therefore, it must be widely known that prince alic died in the riders' quadrant during threshing (EDIT from the replies: we know this was the case because at violet's conscription xaden's speech confirmed even a king's son can die in the quadrant, but he obv didn't say alic was killed and didn't claim the kill as his). but who would know how it happened other than garrick and xaden themselves?
it's not like cadets usually go in groups during threshing so i imagine alic was following garrick to try and eliminate him, and xaden was either just looking out for him or stumbled upon the two and did what he does best - annihilate a mf to defend his own (watching a similar situation unfold at violet's threshing must've awoken memories for xaden lol, and it also makes me wonder whether that's why sgaeyl bonded him in the first place bcuz in xaden's words she "was never fond of bullies" and i believe she's said she chose xaden for his ruthlessness)
we're not aware of any other/older cadets recognizing aaric and anyone who might've seen what went down at xaden's threshing 3 years ago no longer remains at basgiath to tell aaric personally (unless they're a repeater like sawyer??), and they could likely only communicate with the outside world by sending a letter the following year - and even if that happened, though already a stretch, why tell aaric and not halden or the king? why give details?
so i wonder if it was molvic who saw it go down and told aaric bcuz at the time aaric says this to violet, it's been just days after he bonded him (to the point where it's during aaric's thresing that violet tells rhiannon jesinia has found the vault where xaden's little fight with aaric later ensues)
EDIT from my reply: blue dragons are supposed to be the more intelligent and wise breed (remember the king is referred to as King Tauri The Wise, but ofc he's not a rider, and halden and alic don't seem particularly wise, but aaric does) so it's possible molvic was looking to bond xaden, not alic, but seeing xaden kill him in cold blood, he let another, more brutal blue do it - sgaeyl, and it was only years later that he found what he was really looking for in aaric
Parents Weekend prompts! Make sure to tag @empyreanevents and use #parentsweekend2025, or use the AO3 collection. As always, prompts are open to interpretation. Despite the fact I can only find fanart of Lilith, this is for all parents.

Day 1: Unnamed | Many parents in the series lack names, whether that be first, last, or both. Get as creative as you like, but provide names for those without one.
Day 2: Unconditional | For most parents that we know of in the series, there is a common theme of their unconditional love. For the Tyrrish, this was displayed by them sacrificing their lives for the rebellion so that their children may one day be safe from venin. For Lilith, she sacrificed her life to power the wardstone and protect her children. Highlight some other ways parents can show their unconditional love for their children.
King Tauri, is, in fact, a cunning guy (atleast when he needs to be)
Spoilers for all the 3 books.
Making all the heirs to the throne go to the infantry isn't just out of concern for their lives, but also to ensure that the dragons do not have power over the kingdom.
How? The elder of the six dens have power over the other dragons. On top of that, their riders have strong signets. They will automatically be essential to win wars.
The elders were against anyone doing anything, so naturally their riders, who automatically rise higher up the ranks (nepotism or maybe not) have no choice but to obey.
Their humans, in turn, protect the King, and the dragons don't really have much power over the humans at the end. The dragons who do not obey, their riders are killed because they are threats and can defy the King once they rise up the ranks.
Another smart thing Tauri did was not stop the riders from going to Tyrrendor. He knew that one day they will come back, they had to, because the Vale and the dragons' connection to that was a big liability.
Him sending General Melgren and General Sorrengail to ask for help was to show the direness of the situation. Also, dare I say, a way to guilt trip dragons into coming back.
He sent Halden with the squad not for supervision but to make sure the alliances fail. Then, the only thing Tyrrendor and the fliers would have left would be Navarre and its resources.
He then is against the taking in of refugees because it's Xaden on the throne. Xaden has a dragon which is unpredictable. Also, he is a marked one. On top of that, Violet is in a relationship with him. And Violet Sorrengail being on their side guarantees their win. Also, Tyrrendor has a large army, which itself constitutes most of Navarre's. It can become it's own country.
Lilith Sorrengail was an insanely smart woman to not go against Tauri. For whatever period of time, it ensured that her children were safe. On top of that, even if she died, her children had no one who wild take them in. No offense, but Xaden had Lewellen.
The battle of wits will not be between Violet and the Venin. It will be between Violet and Tauri.
With Xaden gone, Violet better get her shit together, or Tauri will win even before shits starts to go down the hill.
-Aaric would introduce you to his friends and act completely normal around you
-Behind closed doors Aaric acts both like a little puppy but also like a mini Xaden, not equally as harsh BUT as dominant as him
-He secretly hugs you a couple seconds longer than anyone else and thinks no one notices (they do and oh do they talk)
-He always 'forgets' one of his shirts because he loves seeing you wear it
-He keeps a tiny portrait from your childhood in his pocket
-He comes to you when the world get too much for him and falls asleep on your chest confessing his love to you
-He loves to eat you out and does so every single time you do the deed
-Aaric has his vows written already (for as long as you have dated)
-Aaric would KILL for you, no matter who, when and where
-When you get hurt its like his heart is breaking and steals his breath
-He pretens to be annoyed by your non-stop talking when secretly your voice is his favourite sound
-Aaric has his whole future planned out with you already and is talking to his friends about his 'wishes with a person he has yet to meet' but everyone knows its you
-When you first started 'dating' you were young kids and went for 'dates' around the palace ordering desert from the servants and Aaric pretended to pay with play money. (then fully platonic childhood crushes)
-When people saw you making out at a party in Basgiath war college you both acted like you were super drunk but were sober as fuck
-Ridoc has caught you after sex so many times and would only shut up if you found him someone he could have sex with
I would also love to write an Aaric imagine, a longer one actually where they have finished their three years and Halden dies (c'mon) and he is to be king and wants to arrange his marriage to (y/n) his longtime secret girlfriend. Would you be up to read such an imagine or nah? :)
