Last night's taste testing of @starrhillbrewery's #KingOfHop variants was pretty fun. With the help of our friend @sledsbehave, the three of us put these Imperial IPAs to the test. We started with the original, then moved to the Habanero and Lemon-Lime, and finished with the Grapefruit version. The order we consumed the four brews isn't exactly how we ranked them. They all had their own characteristics, but there was a few things the had in common. One thing we all agreed on, was that the 7.5% abv felt a little low for an #ImperialIPA. All four versions in the pack have the same abv listed on the label, but the original seemed to have the biggest bite. Not surprising, but even with the added ingredients, all of the beers had just about the same appearance. Again, we started with the regular... We all really enjoyed the big citrusy nose. No added fruit in this one, but there's a bunch of grapefruit and orange notes. Mouthfeel was pretty full, I'm guessing due to a higher FG, which carried a substantial but welcomed sweetness. Massive amounts of hops help balance that sweetness and make this one a very good IPA. Like I said earlier, this version actually had a decent alcohol bite. It's not enough to make the beer harsh, but it makes this brew drink bigger than it is. Next, we opened the #HabaneroKingOfHop and yeah, there was some heat! Not as much as most pepper IPAs that weve had, but very apparent. You really feel the heat on the back of your throat. This was actually the first Chili Pepper IPA that I was able to finish. Next came the Lemon-Lime King of Hop. This was our least favorite of the pack, and the only one that we all agreed that we would pass on if available in the future. For some reason, the flavors and body of the brew gave the three of us the impression of an IPA mixed with Sprite. While the beer wasn't bad tasting, it just felt thin for some reason. Finally we opened up the Grapefruit version. We all agreed that this was the best "flavored" version of King Of Hop. A very nice grapefruit aroma and flavor complimented the base brew. We Bham Beer Buzz guys had the same ranking of the four beers: Original, Grapefruit, Habanero and finally Lemon-Lime.
