#JackedKirby - We Found the 9th Wonder of the World!!! 🐢🐢🐢 Jack arrived at back at Atlas Comics (formerly Timely Comics, in 1961 it would become Marvel Comics) in Dec of 1958 after leaving National (DC) Comics amidst a lawsuit for breaking his contract. He didn’t want to return to Atlas because of problems he had over royalties on earlier Captain America books, but considering he couldn’t work for National anymore he didn’t have many choices if he wanted to stay in the comic book field. He wrote/drew a short UFO story in Dec of 1958 but in 1959 Atlas began publishing a few anthology titles that would provide Kirby with a great forum to convey his artistry. One of these anthologies was Tales to Astonish! 🐢🐢🐢 In Tales to Astonish #Issue1 (published in 1959) Jack kicked off the horror/Sci-Fi anthology series with a big contribution... he drew the cover as well as writing and penciling the main feature “We Found the 9th Wonder of the World!”. 🐢🐢🐢 This issue follows the crew of a fishing vessel led by Captain Kane, who encounters bizarrely large aquatic life: A 4 foot wide Starfish and a 12 foot long LOBSTER! There is a professor on board who recognizes the work of a former colleague in these giant creatures, a missing scientist named Dr Parker. So they set course based on an old map depicting where Parker was headed... but they hit an uncharted island that caused the ship damage. Except that isn’t an island... it’s a giant TURTLE!!! 🐢🐢🐢 They find Parker on the island, captive of some local natives. He explains he had run some genetic experiments on animals like turtles, but he couldn’t control their growth... resulting in these large monsters! #JackedKirby - "Lurking Evil stalking the Haunted Halls" That was the tagline for #Issue3 of Black Panther, published way back in April of 1977. And Kirby did not disappoint... His lurking evil was the Ogar, protector of King Solomon's Tomb!!! Ogar is a monstrous guard in the hidden tomb that BP and his crew are trying to uncover. He is placed there to protect all the wonder ours treasures and artifacts that fill the tomb. A massive individual, Ogar doesn't speak and immediately gets down to business attacking the Panther. Despite BP's impeccable fighting capabilities, Ogar is just to massive and powerful to beat. He has BP on the ropes, until Panther's cohort Mr. Little blasts him with an atomic ray. The insane explosion leaves us with nothing more than a pair of smoking boots... Literally. Ogar is destroyed, and the Panther's group is free to enter the tomb. What's amazing to me is the level of detail that Kirby puts into a character design for a monster he knows will be obliterated in the same issue a few pages after he makes his first appearance. He could have just made a generic monster, but instead Ogar the tomb guard has detailed two toned armor and a crazy piece of headgear, which was sort of a hallmark of Kirby in this era.
