Who voted to expel George Santos? Congressman receives stunning bipartisan rebuke

George Santos was expelled from Congress after a scathing House Ethics report found substantial evidence he broke federal crimes.

“Santos’ expulsion is a rare sight for Congress. Santos is the sixth member ever to be expelled from the House and is the first member in modern times to be expelled without having been convicted of a crime. His absence will shrink the House GOP's already razor-thin majority to 220 seats over Democrats' 213 seats.

“To make matters worse for Republicans, Santos' district leans Democratic, according to the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, offering Democrats a pick-up opportunity to narrow the GOP's majority further. New York law mandates Gov. Kathy Hochul must declare a special election within ten days of a seat's vacancy, and the state must hold the election between 70-80 days after Hochul's proclamation.”

George Santos felt obliged to say something idiotic because he's been getting less attention than usual in recent weeks.

Apparently he had taken a seat reserved for senators at the State of the Union speech in the House chamber. Sen. Mitt Romney informed him that the seats in front were temporary ones reserved for senators, cabinet members, SCOTUS justices, and other non-House members.

Because of that, he's comparing himself to civil rights legend Rosa Parks.

In the clip above, data journalist Harry Enten compared the approval rating of Santos in his congressional district (NY-03) with the favorability rating of Rosa Parks. Santos is in single digits while Rosa Parks is only about ten points short of triple digits.

On a somewhat related note, Democrats may get a chance to redraw congressional districts in New York for the 2024 election. Santos's district currently covers parts of NYC and suburban Nassau County. It doesn't seem likely that it would keep that configuration under a new map.
