Working in a large kitchen I see the strangest things because all sorts of people visit at all times if the year so around Halloween I caught Death himself walk into the bakery and one of our biggest politicians poked his head in to ask if I had seen his favourite mug just a few days ago but the one thing that made me stop everything I was doing was seeing a neatly trimmed shih tzu trot into the sandwich room, continue into the storage for serving utensils and plates before walking through an almost hidden door in the back of the room into the part of the kitchen where hot foot is made. It looked so at home without a care in the world and wasn’t the least bit bothered by me as I followed it around.
Turned out it was a rat finding dog (though apparently not a rat killing dog) and the reason why it was so chill was because we didn’t have rats. They even opened a latch in the ceiling and put it up there and you could hear the pitter patter of its paws as it walked around over our heads.
The reason it was brought in was because the rest of the building had rats but the kitchen had been rat-proofed so well they hadn’t made their way in. Phew!
