Hi there! I randomly stumbled upon your blog (not sure how, since none of it is relevant to my interests) and one thing really got me. What made you go from Management to Hairstyling? That's such a jump! I only ask because I made it all the way to my vet tech practicum and realized "This is too sad, I can't do this all my life", and I'm now taking Criminology. It's a curious topic.
Awesome question! I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. I have always had a dream of running my own company or something along those lines. I am very into alternative fashion, so I wanted to have my own clothing store. I had everything planned, down to the wall paper and crushed velvet ottomans. I knew I would need some kind of management education to really get things started, so with a push from my now ex-boyfriend and $40 for application, I moved to Vancouver, and studied Business Management. Things went really down hill from there.
I am not a book type person, any training I do needs to be hands on. I failed all but 3 of the 10 courses I took that year. My Boyfriend turned out to be extremely abusive, I couldn't even afford to eat. Eventually I broke down, and moved home.
I worked for a year at a cupcake shop, a company that means the world to me after the year and a half I was there. They are, and forever will be, a family to me. When spring 2011 came around, my parents said to me, "You have to go to school this year or pay rent." Since I was already $6000 in debt, I chose school.
I couldn't get into Film without a portfolio, and wasn't sure if business was really something I could do, so on a whim I chose hair. I hadn't been allowed to take cosmetology in high school, and thought it could be a good idea.
So now, here I am, 9 months and 23 days in, beginning my year long (or 1400 hour) apprenticeship to gain my licence as a hair stylist. I'm sure I will one day return to school to study other things I love, but for now, I am going on the daydream of one day opening my own salon focusing on color and alternative hair.
