The last time she had felt this petrified, it had been in third grade back in America, when one of the boys had snuck a life-sized cardboard cutout of Bill Cosby into a bathroom stall for absolutely no reason at all. Aera had played the part of the poor, unsuspecting victim, and she’d wet her favorite Scooby Doo patterned pants. Poor Scooby.

But now things were different. Aera was an adult. Now, she had total and full control over her bladder, and she would absolutely NOT make a fuss. She’d calm Jongin down very, veeeery nicely over a very dignified phone call conversation and everything would be peachy keen.–Ah, who am I kidding. I am so screwed.

And as always, whenever Aera somehow managed to land herself back into the prime spot of receiving her brother’s old stink eye yet again, she went for Plan A.

She couldn’t care less about trying to appear attractive in the eyes of Jongin – she just wanted to live to breathe for another day, and her boss was going to have her hide if she didn’t make it for her shift on Saturday night. He was going to enter a full fledged panic attack with the way the other man-- who he presumed was the boss of this company, what was it called again, Stark? -- no matter, but the way the man was staring at him like he was going to shred Minseok to pieces was pushing him closer and closer to the brink of tears. Just his luck to have the boss walk in on the receptionist chiding him for bringing the wrong package, and then for the same boss to inquire what was going on and give him what was probably the deadliest glare ever.

In a normal situation, of course, Minseok wouldn’t burst into tears so easily. But with the week that he’s had...everything just piling up on top of another, it was like a dam waiting to be broken. Chewing down nervously on his bottom lip as he bowed lowly for the umpteenth time, the parcel slipping in his sweaty hands; voice coming out quiet and meek as he spoke. “I-I’m so sorry, Sir. I apologize deeply-- I didn’t know, I swear- I just t-took whatever the office told me to, but i-it seems that they handed me the wrong package-- I’ll come b-by and deliver it immediately! Really!” He urged desperately, his lower lip quivering as he kept his head ducked low.

Holiday.

Holiday: Our characters will spend a holiday together.In which Jongin and Aera spend Christmas at a charming little ramen restaurant in the lesser known parts of the city.–––“Come on in and out of the cold, Kai! Do you really want frostbite to join us for dinner? Is she that charming?”“Y’know, I should really ask JARVIS to do the rest of us a favor and scan us all for diseases of any sort when we return home.” A nauseated grimace seemed to be indelibly etched into Jongin’s features as he stepped into derelict little restaurant while shooting sullen glances at his sister rather grudgingly. “What kind of place is open on Christmas, anyway? I’ll tell you what – a place that is bloodthirsty for money because it’s hardly earning anything – and this place reeks of desperation!”“Oh, come off it, you fat snob!” Aera chided her older brother and forced him into the tattered faux leather booths with an unsympathetic shove. She raised two slender digits to signal at the waiter, a scrawny, scruffy looking middle-aged man who looked like he needed a good shave. “I wasn’t the one who left the turkey to burn in the oven! It’s either this or you can starve tonight!”Jongin looked positively scandalized. “I’m not fat!” he yelled indigantly liked a kicked puppy. “Oho, you will be, after you’ve had a taste of what I’ve gotten for you and end up wolfing down five servings all by yourself.”The entrepreneur spent the entire ten minute wait for his food stewing in the corner, a proverbial thunder cloud dangling above his head. Only when the piping hot ramen noodles did arrive, milky soup sloshing around appetizingly in their bowls on a tray accompanied by a plate of what was supposed to be gyoza dumplings, if the waiter had understood her accurately (even Aera had to admit that they were the shadiest specimens of Japanese-style dumplings she had ever laid her eyes on) did he look up.And oh, did he look positively enthralled by the taste as he guzzled the delectable soup ravenously like no tomorrow – yet another Kodak moment for the taking. Truly picturesque. Aera hadn’t even emptied her first bowl before he started on his third.“Mei!” he marvelled, waving his chopsticks like a madman as he chomped down on a piece of cha-shu. “This is absolutely – this is simply – just – so–” Jongin seemed to be grasping frantically, dark brown eyes downright ecstatic.“…orgasmic?” Aera offered helpfully, sipping a bit of soup.“Orgasmic! Yes! This will be the new name of this place once it has been revamped. Spectacular! Utterly splendid! You there!” He grasped the waiter and shook the poor man over-enthusiastically, voice rising fervently. “Bring me the chef. At once!”“B-But sir,” the waiter stuttered as his sunken cheeks paled. “I am the only chef here!”Aera arched her eyebrows as she stole a chunk of meat out of her brother’s bowl surreptitiously. Talk about being majorly understaffed.“Magnificent! My dear sir,” Jongin chortled and pumped his arm excitedly, forcing a very painful handshake onto the very confused man. “Tonight, I would like to offer you a business proposition of epic proportions! You will shut down this restaurant and open a new one owned by me, with the exact same menu in Gangnam, and I will fund it all. You will become head chef, and use the same recipe and same cooking methods, but with ingredients of incomparable quality, and the most advanced cookware there is!”“Head chef! G-Gangnam!” The waiter had been reduced to a mass of jelly on legs and an incomprehensible stream of phrases in the Busan dialect. “This is… Oh, my God!”“Not God, but possibly the next best person you could hope to get. I’m–”“I-I know you! I’ve seen you on the news!” The chef shrieked and stammered faintly. He looked as if he was ready to pass out any second. “Mistaah… Mistaaah StuckKEU!”The forgotten sister glanced at the two and furtively stole yet another larger piece of cha-shu.The horrified grimace returned. “Let’s stick to Mr Kim, shall we?” He patted the man’s breast pocket with a haughty smirk adorning his lips. “There’s my name card. I’ll contact you in three days. Make preparations, understand? Hey, where did all my meat disappear to?”“Yes sir! Oh, thank you… Thank you!” Aera wordlessly handed him a napkin to wipe the copious streams of tearful snot running down his nostrils.“Let’s take a walk, mei? Oh, and before I forget,” Jongin spared his newest employee a cocky gaze as he turned to exit the establishment. “Stop serving the gyoza dumplings. They taste revolting.”“Jongin!” Aera scolded and pinched his waist, earning an agonized howl and a surly glare from her brother. “Behave!”But the chef was hanging onto every word spewing out of his mouth like it was divine intervention from the heavens. “Gyoza!” he blew his nose into the napkin. “Reeevolting!” he chanted the phrase lovingly and looked upon Kai with the eyes of a lovesick schoolgirl.Jongin excused himself first, leaving Aera hopping awkwardly from foot to foot as she mentally debated on whether to call the ambulance. The man was quaking in his boots and his lips had turned a sickly shade of blue. He looked like he was about to have a seizure! She decided against it and headed to join her brother, albeit hesitantly. “Merry Christmas, uh, Chef!” Aera called out uncertainly as she stepped out to embrace what was left of their frosty holiday.She was going to envelop Jongin in a vice-like hug, then pinch him square in the gut for nearly giving the pitiful restaurant owner an aneurysm, and then strangle him again.

And now he was the one clicking his tongue when expressing condescending commentary, dark orbs moving to deliberately donate a glance to the man standing at the other side of the desk.

Definitely the banker knew who the other was --his position allowing him to catch some information about the worldwide known billionaire that surely the media peers couldn’t obtain even if the other was known for being quite addicted to the spotlight and the attentions it gives to him. Plus, some of the associations the other seemed to work with were listed in one of the many folders he managed to snatch during his fugue from the crumbling facility where the EXODUS PROJECT used to have lieu --which only contributed to grow his own curiosity since there were still so many things he didn’t know, so many things he needed to find in order to protect his companions from the perils of governments and associations wanting to cage them again, the sole thought causing his stomach to churn.

Nonetheless, philanthropist or not, the nickname coming from the other’s lips was enough to cause his own heartshaped lips to draw a line in annoyance and thick brows to frown --never getting used to commentaries concerning his physical appearance may them be sarcastic, jokes or truly meant to express some form of pleasure. Hands were moving automatically towards the stashes of money, swiftly stashing them in the bill-counting machine as he typed the various vault credentials on the online form, then handling pen and deposit slip on the desk surface.

The combination was so lovely, and she drew her fingertips over the petals in appreciation of them, but there was something about her smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. Guilt prowled around in her abdominal cavity, pushing on her stomach until she felt mildly sick and squeezing her heart enough to make it ache. She wondered if he would say the same, knowing how she dealt with potential threats, lately. But all of these thoughts converged on her mind in less than a second, and she immediately blocked them out, as she was so accustomed to doing lately, so she could look up at him with a more genuine smile and a lilt of excitement to her tone. “I have not danced in so long! It would be my sincere pleasure to.”

The gentle smile of her lips hinted at nostalgia as she absentmindedly stirred the contents of the pot, attention riveted to the photograph."That’s when your Papa and I got married, sweetie," Jinah’s adoptive mother breathed airily, dropping a couple of bay leaves into the scalding hot liquid. She turned her attention back to the stove, and Jinah noticed that the movement seemed nearly fluid, as if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. "…Is that where you got that too?" Jinah prompted eagerly, pointing a toffee-coated finger at the silver band wrapped around one of her mom’s fingers. She watched as it glimmered beautifully in the pale evening light."Mmhmm. Now be a good girl, sweetie, and — Ah."Her commands fell on deaf ears, and Jinah scurried out of the kitchen with an excited squeak, but not before taking one last glance at her parents’ wedding portrait. She eyed the telltale glow of euphoria on their faces and the way Mama’s hand fit perfectly in Papa’s, slender hands painted with elegant ribbons of maroon held tightly against coarse, large ones.She decided with a determined nod, tiny feet stumbling clumsily towards the sandbox, where Jongin was. “Ge!” I want to be happy like that.——"…Marriage?" It’s a very serious thing, you know. Ahem.” Jongin cleared his throat, looking very self-important. Her eyes shined, making no effort to conceal her honest admiration and curiosity. She’d once overheard Papa and Mama saying that ge was a boy of extraordinary intelligence and potential, and although she didn’t really understood what that meant, she knew that he was very, very smart. Jinah didn’t mind being the more ordinary, untalented one of the two. She had no reason to abhor being herself if Papa, Mama and Jongin loved her all the same."Marriage," her brother drawled, pacing back and forth in the tiny sandbox, "is something that two people do when they love each other. "The question is if I want to.”"You will!" she proclaimed earnestly, stomping her feet childishly. "Or I’ll tell Jenny that you were the one that threw the bucket of spiders into the girls’ bathroom.""That was an experiment!" her brother huffed in protest. "I was trying to determine if the intensity of their shrieks were indeed influenced by an increase in the number of… Ugh. Whatever, I’ll do it."An hour later, the siblings walked down a makeshift aisle in the garden, Jinah modelling a stunning one-of-a-kind piece put together by Jongin with toilet paper and twenty miles of tape, holding a lovely bouquet of cauliflower she had stolen from the fridge when their parents were busy with the guests. And there they sat, rocking back and forth on the garden swing for the rest of the evening whilst feeding each other onion rings and ketchup for dinner (because to their dismay, Mama and Papa both refused to lend out their weddings rings for the very special occasion) until the sun set.
