The true measure of social impact is not how well you can care for someone in your presence, but how well they thrive in your absence.
Meet one of our Uganda Interns: Levi Dulay!
Hometown: San Diego, CA
Position: Production Assistant, Gulu, Uganda
What was your favorite thing you learned during your time as a KK intl. intern? Even though I am not the Photojournalist intern for our team, I have learned a ton regarding photo and video since being out here. I have been able to do some personal video projects, as well as a few projects for KK intl., as well as other amazing organizations in Gulu. such as Restore International/Love Does and Bicycles Against Poverty. There are also plenty of amazing moments/people worth capturing through photography out here so I’ve gotten some great experience with my camera in that field too.
How would you best describe your personality? Tell us a little bit about yourself. The best way to describe my personality is “different.” I love asking questions and learning and being curious about almost everything. I thrive when learning happens outdoors and through experiences and from people and my own mess ups (so Uganda is perfect). I love people and other cultures and inspiration and the idea of changing a life for the better. I am a big fan of story and how every person’s story matters. Some big passions of mine are video, music, woodworking, traveling, people, and Jesus.
What inspired you to apply for an internship at KK intl.? My brother and I started a clothing company back home (it’s called 777 Collective, you should check us out !) and one of the companies that we drew a lot of inspiration from was Krochet Kids. I definitely learned a ton from entrepreneurship as my teacher, but I figured that an even better teacher would be the very company that inspired me most, so I applied to hang out with them for six months. Before coming out, I was also going to school for International Business and decided that interning for an international business would be the best platform for me to learn more about this field.
What is your favorite part about the KK intl. intern program? The Ladies (they are the ultimate reason as to why I am here), the other interns (I definitely could not do any of this without them), the other organizations and opportunities in Gulu (they are all super incredible and we are all super tight-knit), immersion into a foreign culture (which has challenged me and probably taught me the most), oh and my yellow bike (it helps me get just about everywhere).
Last week over 300 boxes came in from our friends in Uganda and Peru. It was all hands on deck unloading these bad boys from the truck. Interns Charis, Heather, and Kelsey are overjoyed to see so much impact in these countries.
The cure for poverty has a name, in fact: it’s called the empowerment of women. We are proud to partner with Krochet Kids Intl who works with women in Uganda to teach the tolls and provide the resources to rise above poverty. Cleaning and organizing day in the knit room turned into the day I'm gonna be inspired by for a long time. Eight hours of working, learning and laughing side by side with the ladies left me amazed by how smart, how kind, how open-hearted they are. There is so much potential in each and every of them, as there is in every human being. So many people in the world never get the chance to flourish, to show how much talents and skills and energy they have. And I am so happy and excited to be a part of work that helps people rise above their circumstances and change their worlds.
There is beauty in taking something simple - whether it’s spools of yarn, a new idea, or a beginning conversation - and transforming it into so much more.
Learn more about how KK intl. transitioned from an idea to reality, as well as how our work is making an impact in the communities of Uganda and Peru.
Our intern team at KK Uganda went to Fort Patiko last week, where they spent the day hiking and the night camping under the star-studded sky.
