Open the door Part 1
Elijah stood there waiting for his brother to walk through the door. There was no doubt about him hearing about the kiss by now. Elijah tried to keep the smile off of his face as he thought about that magical moment.
He could hear the door open downstairs and braced himself for what was to come. Klaus’s rage was just something he learned to deal with. Much to his surprise, it wasn’t the younger brother. It was the girl that has been commanding his thoughts and dreams since the second he laid his eyes on her- Hayley. She smiled at him for a brief moment before she ran toward him.
“Elijah. You can not tell Klaus about what happened.” She played with the edge of his suit while she talked. “You of all people know what happens when someone pisses him off.” She looked up at him biting her lip lightly, unknowingly driving the older Mikaelson crazy.
“Yes, yes.” He sighed, bringing his hand up to cup her cheek. “I understand the anger of my brother,” Elijah spoke slowly, looking down at the beautiful girl in front of him. He dropped his hand and forced himself to turn away from her. The last thing he wanted to do was kiss her again and again, but he wasn’t going to let this girl feel the wrath of Niklaus. “My brother is going to be here any minute. You should go so you are not here when he is. For I do not know how this well good.”
“Elijah…” Hayley spoke slowly, not sure what to say next. She walked up behind him, touching his shoulder lightly. “I just need you to be careful.” She muttered almost to herself, before disappearing through the window. Mere seconds later Klaus himself strode into the room.
“Well, brother. So nice of you to meet me here.” Klaus smiled that Klaus smile before pacing the room. He held his hands behind his back, biting his lip. He didn’t know what to say, and it was very clear to Elijah.
“What is it, brother?” Elijah didn’t know where this was going, but he was very curious. He sat down on the couch and waited for his brother to continue with whatever speech was coming.
“What is Hayley to you?”
Elijah was taken aback and didn’t quite know how to respond. “She is very dear to me. As she is to you.”
“Right.” Klaus paused and looked at his brother. “She is the mother of my daughter. Doesn’t that count for something?”
“Whatever do you mean?”
“Why doesn’t she look at me, like she looks at you? What is different between her and I and you and her?” There was a look in his eye that has not been there in a very long time. It was a pain. It was hurt. He clearly didn’t know what he was going to do, and he clearly didn’t know how to deal with these emotions that he was feeling.
“Niklaus…” Elijah didn’t know what to say. He always had something to say, but right now he didn’t. He was truly speechless. His brother was talking about the women that he loved in a way that he never thought possible.
“Elijah, you talked so much about family and a new change. I want that.” Klaus stopped pacing and looked out the window in front of him. “I want to do it right. I want hope to have a family and know what it is like to have a normal chance even though nothing about her life is normal. I want happiness.” The last sentence he spoke was so quiet you wouldn’t have been able to hear it unless you were a vampire. It was clear he was telling the truth.
“Do you love her?” Elijah stood up and fixed his suit carefully, watching his brother.
“Yes. I think I do.”
“And what are you going to do about it? It is clear she doesn’t feel the same way.”
Klaus looked at his brother like his heart had just been ripped from him. “I am going to prove to her that I am worthy to love. That I am not going to hurt her, actually quite the opposite. I will protect her and our daughter with my life.”
There was a moment of silence before Elijah decided to speak, even though he still wasn’t sure what to say. “I kissed her, Niklaus.”
“You what?” Klaus dropped his eyes to the floor, messing with his daylight ring.
“You didn’t know.”
“Enough brother. I know you love her, but I also know she cares about me as much as you.” He looked at his brother with a challenging look in his eyes. “Why don’t we let her decide, hmm?”
Elijah didn’t really like the sound of that, but the last thing that he was going to do was rob Hayley of the option of choice.
Meanwhile, Hayley was out in the bayou trying to gather learn more about her family. Because of the witches, they were trapped to doing what they wanted. “Hey, Jack.” Hayley smiled warmly at her friend of the pack. “What are you doing today?”
“Well we were going to go hunting, then have a bonfire later.” He smiled and gave her a hug. “Unless there is something else the magically hybrid wants to do?”
“No. No. That is not why I came out here. Just wanted to spend time with my family.” Laughing quietly, Hayley shook her head. She was tired of being told what to do, but she was also tired of never being able to let her guard down. So that’s just what they did. They ran, bows in hand and hunted. She let her guard down and just had fun, and when nightfall came she laughed and sat around and got to know the people that she called family.
“If you could change the color of your wolf, what would you change it to?” One of the children that were sitting to the left of Hayley spoke up with a smile on her face. She loved to imagine life differently. Not because she didn’t like how she lived, but because there was something magical about the unknown.
Hayley shook her head and laughed. “Now, Isabella, where did you get an idea like that?” Hayley looked at Jackson and he also laughed. “Everyone knows that the black and white wolf is the best.”
Jackson nudged her lightly. “Yeah, you really think so? Isn’t that your wolf’s color?”
“Oh. You might be right.” Hayley smirked at her friend and laughed. She turned back to the little girl. “And what is your favorite wolf color?”
“I really, really, really, like the black wolf. She’s so pretty.” Isabella’s smile was so big, no one could contain what joy she felt.
In her pocket, Hayley’s phone rang. Never could she have a night away, not that she much minded. She stood up and walked away from the fire that was burning bright. “Yes, Elijah.”
“I know you are having a night away but I would like to see you. I would like to tell you something.” His voice was slow and careful, almost like he didn’t know what he was going to say next.
“What is it? What’s wrong?” Hayley looked around before walking further into the woods away from her friends and family. “Did something happen?”
“Easy Hayley. Nothing bad happened. I just need to tell you something.”
Hayley turned around and dropped the phone to her side. “Elijah. What happened?” She began to walk toward him and the look on his face made her pause.
“Hayley,” he paused not sure how to start, or if he should tell her about what Niklaus said, “I care about you. And so, does this family.”
“I know that. You don’t have to tell me.”
“Hayley.” He took a step toward her before he was just in front of her. Just out of arms reach. “I love you. Since the day I met you I loved you. You are good and you are pure and that is something that I love about you.” He reached out to her and touched her cheek before bending down and lightly kissing her.
She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer. “I love you too.”
“So, does my brother.”
Hayley paused and pulled away from Elijah, taken aback by what he said. “What?”
