8 years ago @klephdollaz passed away. This is his mural. I go see it every time I’m in the Bottom. The last time I did was when I gave the speech on my #IGTV at a protest. I went over by myself when no one was payin attention to me and said to Kleph “Can you believe this stuff man? How’d I do that? Thank you.” In the era of #HipHop in #RVA that I started in Kleph was the top notch. He was one of those guys you would say “if only I could work with him.” Fortunately, I did though we never released anything. I recorded some stuff over his beats, but hanging out to #freestyle at his spot was a moment that made me believe in myself so much more. He respected my talent and wasn’t afraid to tell me. He was as proud as he was honest, as honest as he was humble. I was so surprised and motivated. Later on, a week before he passed, we saw each other at a show and we were both excited because we’re finally going to do an interview, together. Instead, I ended up writing words for @rvamag about what his passing meant to us all. His legacy now is bigger than music, it’s @godsmorningfndn which is a foundation set up by his family. They do scholarships and all sorts of things for the community. I urge you to check them out and donate if you can. Additionally, if you are an artist in this city, do research on this legend. It doesn’t matter how high you rise if you lose connection with your roots. Kleph taught me to see God in everything, and to not be afraid to see God in myself. At my best, at my worst, in my talent, my pain, my past, present, and future.
