Francis Lee, the director, heavily based the movie on his life in the countryside --including meeting a Romanian dude who was facing xenophobia, so I'm certain that was intentional. Ppl irl definitely confuse Romanian and Romani (although they can overlap) and say that shit.
I guess that’s possible. It’s just in a story telling sense it would be weird if the director put it in there to indicate Johnny’s ignorance then had no follow-up explanation that ‘hey, Romanians =/= Romani’ because people who didn’t know the difference will still not know the difference. Plus, from Gheorghe’s reaction it seems he is personally offended (’don’t call me that’ instead of ‘don’t use that word’).
((( although personally it means I can headcanon Gheorghe to be Romani so I don’t really mind )))
