Please! Help The Creature is ferocious!
7 track album
This was an incredibly charming debut from a few months back, and coming back to it now to write this review I find that the simplicity and earnestness of these melodies really holds up. What we have here is 7 wide ranging tracks that form a short narrative arc, distinguishing themselves with some clear musical references and creating atmospheres that lean effectively on a video game-y nostalgia. But the tracks on this demo all accomplish a lot in a little time, with a nice palette of sounds that weave through these tracks and give the whole set a sonic familiarity (Lo-fi, but polished) that gives focus to even a short release as this one.
“Farewell, Home” starts the album off with a gentle syncopated melody that is impossibly catchy - it gives off a nice Overworld, excited-about-the-quest-ahead vibe. This melody is extremely strong, and the person behind this project, Shroud, is clearly aware of that, as the melody is implied again in the more tranquil harp-and-flute album closer “The Queen’s Garden”, turned into a gorgeous lullaby with some nice contrasts of texture throughout the tune.
It is kind of true that the strength of the initial melody makes it a little harder to remember distinguishing characteristics about the remaining tracks when I’m not actively listening to them, but I’ll put some thoughts in here as they play - “O’er the Twilit Plains” gets some nice momentum out of a very mechanical-sounding programmed piano line, bolstered by a wind melody and a bit of panflute toward the end. Ultimately this track doesn’t draw me in as much, but it is probably the closest to traditional DS on this album.
“Goblin Marketplace”, with its bass guitar, hand percussion, and sitar-like sounds, feels extremely video-gamey. This one has a kind of odd fade-in that I find especially charming, and a hard stop that feels pretty well planned, even though a lot of the melodic elements feel like they could be improvised over what is essentially a two chord jam. It’s a nice balance of a more chaotic element but without losing the solid organization these tracks all have in common. “Attack in the Night” builds a lot of tension quickly with its 16th note acoustic guitar which is quickly joined by melodic and percussive orchestral elements. This track builds to a frenzied level pretty quickly, and then stays there for most of the length of the track, but it is nice that it gives a more subdued ending after maintaining a high level of tension.
“Morning Rain” creates a nice image with electric pianos, synth bells, and some pure synth tones swelling and fading underneath. It feels like it may be composed/performed with a delay pedal, which, in addition to the slowly decaying synths in the background, give this piece a shimmering texture that is pretty satisfying. “Enchanting Moonlight” is the longest piece on the album, and it does have the most lengthy structure of any of the pieces on the album, although also builds across its nearly 5 minute length with some percussion, winds, and string pads. I am on the fence about this one - sometimes I get extremely lost in it, and other times it feels a little aimless. But I do hope this artist tries some longer tracks as a whole, even 5-6 minutes as opposed to 2-3, just to see what can be accomplished as far as narrative within a single track - “Enchanting Moonlight” is promising enough to suggest the artist could do well with longer tracks. I hope to hear more from this artist.
