Spoilers Ahead
I’ve been playing Outlast quite often for the last year and here is a thought I had.
I really hope RB handles antagonists better in the Outlast spin-off game or in Outlast 3. With the exception of Chris, Loutermilch and to some extent Marta, their antagonists pop up, terrorize you for a short while then either die or go missing until the next one pops up, rinse and repeat
Chris in the main game is pretty frequent, to the point you never forget about him. Something I didn’t like about Marta. She antagonizes you for the entirety of Act 1 then disappears until Act 6 where she shows up for a two minute chase scene where she dies. I did like how she died in Outlast 2 for irony reasons, but I fault the game for the fact on my first run I had forgotten about her until she popped up for that last chase scene.
The Twins hardly have any backstory, the Walrider is only there for the end piece unless you’re Waylon and he’s only really in the beginning. Frank was a missed opportunity because he seemed fairly interesting but he just disappears and you never hear from or about him again. Eddie leaves a little bit more of an impression but that’s only because you get cutscenes with him and watch him die. And on the subject of Trager, his bit is entirely too short. I’d have loved to see more Trager.
On Outlast 2, Val seems like a very interesting character but ultimately we get them for only three quick chase scenes. Nick and Laird may have seen interesting if, yet again, they weren’t reduced to a few chase scenes before ultimately dying. I mean, hell, for how much effort Knoth has put into this entire chase, you only see him twice.
I feel Red Barrels has a lot of potential considering Loutermilch, Chris and Marta (for what it’s worth) are all incredibly interesting and well done antagonists, Frank lesser so but still up there. I just feel that leaving it open for interpretation with 95% of your antagonists just hurts you in the end.
