26/4/17 10 days after I sowed seeds, they are all popping up out on the balcony garden. And the ones indoors are doing well, especially the repotted cucumber seedlings. Trough 1 - some undefined Chinese veg (we didn't label the seeds!) Trough 2 - pak choi; obviously doesn't mind the cold weather, fingers crossed for it! Indoors - cucumbers, tender stem broccoli, brussels sprouts, kohl rabi, courgettes, gardener's delight cherry tomatoes and kale.

Seed sowing - the anticipation, the hope
When I got up this morning, I couldn’t help looking at the seeds I sowed yesterday 🌱 Yes, I know they don’t pop up overnight but I’m so excited for the possibilities that seed sowing promises.
I’m not very good at keeping my gardening diary, but it’s good to document at least the first seeds sown so that I can work out how long the different seeds take to germinate.
And I’m sure everyone has seeds without labels! I know my mum gave them to me but haven’t a clue what they might be! They will be Chinese veg of sorts so will be tasty if they take.
I’m growing for my mum: cucumbers, courgettes, and Chinese melons and bitter gourds.
I'm growing: curly leaf kale, purple stem broccoli, kohl rabi, gai lan, spinach, chop suey greens, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, sunflowers and alpine pineapple strawberries.
Our 2024 Garden: Some garden destruction!
We had a lovely mild morning today. We supposedly had rain last night, but nothing noticeable. I’m going to have to go back out to water the remaining garden beds today. As I write this, my various weather apps tell me we are at 15C/59F. I just made a trip to the town north of us. There’s a bank with one of those signs with a rotating display that includes time and temperature. According to…
Our 2024 Garden: morning firsts
I had a couple of nice surprised while doing my morning rounds! The first was spotting new seedlings – of White Scallop patty pan squash!!! View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Re-Farmer (@the.refarmer) This was our third attempt of sowing these, and I planted two pairs of seeds in the bed with the onions and shallots. There are still none in the pot (sowed them twice in there) and…
More cuteness, and a quick direct sow
I just got back from outside, and get to share a bit of cuteness with you! View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Re-Farmer (@the.refarmer) Drier Sheet is back today, and still just a bundle of nerves. I was, however, able to get a look at the stitches on his leg. We were not able to dose him with the remaining painkillers the vet sent home with him because he simply disappeared for…
Our 2021 garden; summer sowing
Our 2021 garden; summer sowing
Finally! I got the summer sowing done, in all three empty beds. 🙂 Before I started on that, though, I made another attempt at trying to keep the woodchuck out of our carrot beds. I’d read the Epsom salts are a thing they don’t like, while also being good for the garden. We didn’t have a lot left, so one of the beds was a bit sparser. We shall see if it helps, any. Then I got to work on the…

Growing things
When we got that one really cold night in late May, most things survived (the new mulberry sapling, sadly, did not) just fine. However, anything that was budding lost their flowers. Including almost all of the lilacs. This Korean lilac usually blooms after the common lilac, but with the warmth we’d had earlier in May, it was starting to bud, too. This morning, I found this single spray of…
