Rules and guidelines

This post details the rules and guidelines for my blog. Please read them and make sure they align with your own values so you won't be disappointed.

General

This blog is a safe space for you to be just as you are without fear of judgement or ridicule. I have no intention of harming, hurting or judging anyone, but if you do feel like I did, please tell me and refer to the rules and guidelines about 'feedback' later on in this post.

This blog will not tolerate hate, ridicule or judgement of any kind towards others as there are limited options for people to stand up for themselves (and I'd love to keep the comment section organised). While I won't judge or ridicule anyone for who they are, I will set boundaries to protect myself and others based on behavior instead of who you are as a person. Those are two separate things.

This blog is a passion project, so unfortunately it will be irregular when I post or what I post. I'm not a professional by any means and my work will reflect that, although I strive to improve myself continuously. It's a learning experience for myself as the primary goal and entertaining others as a secondary.

This blog reserves the right to its works. It doesn't consent to republishing, copying, plagiarizing, etc. of its works in any way without prior consent of myself, Aurora. If you want to use my work, please ask beforehand.

Requests

This blog takes requests for different types of content. From full one shots to short drabbles, so don't be shy in requesting exactly what you want. It's great practice for me too!

This blog posts the requests however it's best suited to me. This means it may take a while before your request is answered, but you can always ask me how far I am with your request or tell me if you really want it to be out quickly. I'll try my best, but I make no promises.

This blog takes requests for a couple of fandoms, but is open to expand if your fandom isn't on the list. Don't be afraid to ask me to write something even if it isn't specified. There won't be many instances where I'll reject your request, although new fandoms may come with longer wait times and less in-character-ness if I'm truly unfamiliar.

This blog takes requests for different types of genres, themes and topics. From angst to smut, as long as I feel comfortable with the topic, I will write it. There aren't many themes I'm not comfortable with, so don't be shy. If I'm truly uncomfortable, I will let you know through answering or DM depending on what's possible and maybe offer alternatives if I see them.

This blog reserves the right to answer or not answer requests. I will try to answer any requests that follow the rules and guidelines, but if a request doesn't follow them I hold the right to refuse to answer. This doesn't mean I won't answer any that don't follow the rules to a 't', but it does mean there is a chance.

This blog doesn't condone the interaction of minors or ageless blogs with mature content, however as I don't have the time to check all blogs that interact, I also call on people's own responsibility. This blog would love feedback with specific examples due to clarity for myself. All the better if they include examples of how you'd like to see it written instead. It's a great learning experience! The Devil Wears Prada (Pt. 2)

Your nails tapped against the hardwood desk. The sound soothed the thrum of nerves buzzing beneath your skin as you stared at the photo's scattered across the desk.

A picture says more than a thousand words, indeed.

With a gentle touch, you picked up one of the clearer photo's. Your--apparently, former-- money making treasure trove shaking hands with the devil. You wondered what he'd paid him. For the boy to switch sides so readily, knowing his life would be on the line, had to have been quite a steep price.

A small smile curved on your lips, eyes latching on to the intricate details of Koko's hair. Of his tattoo. Of his designer clothes. A huff of laughter slipped through your teeth and shook your shoulders just slightly.

Gucci.

That had to be against the script.

You spun your chair around, flicking your wrist. The picture floated into the flames, erasing the proof of betrayal with it. It didn't matter, after all. Maybe it was even a good thing the boy switched sides.

That way he'd be caught on Bonten's side, not yours.

And you'd have full control over the narrative. Just how you liked it.

Tomorrow's raid could either make or break your career. If all went according to plan, Bonten would never see it coming. You'd have seized their assets, arrested the lot of them and gained a monopoly of the Japanese drug trade within a couple of hours.

There was only one the matter of your former accomplice. However, experience over the years told you it'd be fine. After all, no one ever believed the criminal. Especially when the criminal was part of Bonten and said organization had been a headache for the better part of a decade now.

If that headache was because they blocked the higher ups' own business or simply because someone actually still had a conscious in this building... Well, that doesn't matter, does it?

A smirk pulled at your lips as you watched the flames flicker.

As the last embers died, you rose to your feet. You replaced the ashes with new firewood. You checked the automated ignition hidden in a small alcove in the heard, turning the nozzle slightly.

Your eyes glanced out the window to see a full moon rising before you shut the curtains and made your way to bed.

Nothing could stop you. Tomorrow you'd rise from the ashes he left behind when he burned down the world you thought you'd rule together.

Something stirred deep inside your heart.

The thrill of vengeance, you thought.

There was nothing else it could be.

The screeching of tires rang through the business district, announcing the breaking of dawn. Car doors slammed as men in dark suits and men in tactical gear surrounded Bonten's building. Tension as thick as your boss's foundation hung in the air.

Your heart hammered in your chest, your blazer moving just slightly with every beat. As you leaned against the van, arms crossed, one finger tapping against your blazer, you glanced to your boss standing beside the unit's commanding officer.

You could only wait.

Wait for the moment the unit had secured the building and the fraud division could move in.

Wait until you'd see him for the first time in years.

Wait for the cocky little smirk to be wiped off his face.

Minutes went by.

The grip on your arms got tighter, brows creasing as you glanced down at your watch. You shifted your weight. It shouldn't be long now. If all went to plan, they should be done apprehending Bonten any second--

A crackle sounded through your earpiece.

Just one word.

"Clear."

That's when you moved. A calm settled in your chest. Your breathing slowed down, hands steady as you grabbed your bag and followed your boss and the commanding officer into the building.

Your heels clicked on the marble floor, the sound slicing through the silence like bullets. Their red soles matching the exact shade of your lips. Your suit, tailored to perfection, seemed to be set alight as the sun's rays bounced off the vibrant red.

Prada.

As it should've been all along.

You saw him the second you rounded the corner.

The way his jaw ticked when the agent closest to him announced the arrival of the fraud division. The way his gaze dragged up your body until he met your eyes and realized who now stood before him. His breath caught for just a fraction. You noticed. You know he did too.

A smirk lifted the corner of his lips. Tongue poking out with a forced nonchalance. The same nonchalance he'd always had. Effortless confidence looking suspiciously like the frail arrogance of a man driven into a corner by the woman he'd discarded without a care.

You're sure he cared now, though.

You watched as he tracked the tip of your tongue run along your lips. Your eyes darkened, smirk stretching into a wicked grin.

A quick glance around showed the abhorrent lack of attention. Everyone too busy seizing the assets, gaining access to the systems. Unknowingly, stupidly, giving you access to everything.

"Your system is working perfectly," the intern said as he leaned back in the office chair. He grinned as he looked at you.

A colleague laughed. "Yeah, no overtime for us."

The rest of the division laughed along, murmuring about what to do with all that free time. Conversation flowed, attention dropped. Everything followed the script.

Kokonoi frowned. You watched something shift behind his eyes. A flash of something. Anger. Calculation. Realization.

Fear.

When his lips parted, no words came out.

A first for him, you're sure.

His hands clenched into fists. Body rigid as his eyes scanned the room. As if seeing the reality of the situation clearly for the first time.

"The devil's due comes for everyone," you said, voice barely above a whisper.

Your hand lifted. You let your manicured nail drag down his cheek, along his jaw. The sharp tip dug into his flesh, his chin tilting up. Pure adrenaline shot through your veins. The feeling of power exhilarating.

He held your gaze, looking down his nose. This was how you knew him. High and mighty. Looking down at anyone he deemed beneath him--and that was basically everyone except his closest circle...

And you, a long ago.

But right now, while he looked at you, you saw only a tiny man.

Right at your mercy.

The giggle leaving your lips was nothing short of unhinged. Your hand dropped to his throat, fiddling with the dainty Gucci chain around it. It was such a fine piece of jewelry.

Made for him, actually. You had it custom made for him, after all.

Something raw clawed at your throat. Sudden and overwhelming. Your fingers trembled just the tiniest bit. No one would've noticed. No one should've noticed.

But he had.

Of course, he fucking had.

And the air shifted.

Panic, rage, or something far more dangerous to show... You didn't know. Didn't want to know.

His warm breath fanned across your neck. A strand of his hair tickled your nose, heat crawling up your face as his voice reached your ears. "You're right, darling."

Your breath hitched as he pulled away just enough to look you in the eyes. Ice filled your veins, burning as if his hand had closed around your throat, memories forced their way through all your defenses.

Hot, cold, feverish memories.

The smirk dropped from his lips, a wry smile in its place. "So, you better start running like hell," he said. "Because, I do come for everyone," he stepped back, "Even you."

The audacity.

Heat replaced the ice. No time to recover as feelings muddled together, uglier, nastier, yet making you feel more alive than you'd had in years.

You chuckled, sharp, eyes blazing. "You still think you're the devil, don't you, Hajime?"

The flush of red creeping up his neck made you grin. He tried to shake it off, but his smirk looked much more strained than before. "Am I not?"

Shaking your head, you stepped forward. There, chest pressed to his, the beating of your hearts synchronizing, all else faded away.

For a second, your eyes dropped to his lips before glancing back up. You swallowed, throat dry. "No, you're not," you whispered, a small smile weighed down by years of anger and grief and heartbreak on your lips.

Your finger hooked around the chain, a slow breath leaving your lips, hands steadying as you snapped it clean off his neck. The chain slid from your grasp and onto the floor without a sound. It glittered where the light caught the tiny Gucci logo.

He froze as you stepped closer once more, eyes narrowing. Reaching your arms around him, the cuffs snapped closed around his wrists. He hissed at the deliberate tightness of cold metal pinching his skin, jolting back as he pulled at the cuffs in disbelief.

You took a step back, looked at him, ignoring the sting in your heart as you waved a hand towards the agents. He struggled against the agents grabbing him, cursing under his breath, but stopped the second your voice broke through the panicked calculations running in his mind.

Your finger traced the chain around your own neck, feeling the coolness of the logo against your skin. You smiled. "The devil wears Prada, after all."

For someone claiming to be oh so smart, your boss sure is real fucking stupid.

Trying to file a shopping spree under ‘professional business attire expenses’ had to be amongst the most obvious and unoriginal ones you’d seen in your three years working for Japan’s Security Bureau. 

Peak corruption, honestly.

You had to respect the arrogance. The only one rising above her in terms of sheer pride would be him, Kokonoi Hajime.

Or as you used to call him—the devil himself—affectionately, of course.

You’d been staring at your screen for all hours of the night when your colleague set down a cup of coffee barely hot and bitter enough to count as coffee. Not to mean you didn’t like it. You loved your overpriced Starbucks as much as the next person, but he’d forgotten something.

This wasn’t about love.

This was about survival.

And you definitely wouldn’t survive the all-nighter you just pulled without the darkest, nastiest and bitterest coffee Tokyo had to offer. It didn’t matter if it was three days old from a dumpster or a freshly-made fuck-up from your favourite, oblivious, little intern. As long as it had enough caffeine to jump-start your overworked and underpaid heart— you were good.

With a slight nod to your colleague and something you hoped wasn’t too wry of a smile, you took a sip. A shiver ran down your spine at the creaminess flowing down your throat as it closed up. You’d gagged less when your dog had the runs. That said something.

Pressing your tongue to your cheek, you found the intern running around, arranging papers while simultaneously trying to fix the printer and kiss your boss’s ass. His eyes met yours, glazed over with the imminent realisation he’d chosen the wrong path in life. The slightest hint of sympathy touched your desensitized heart. 

You jerked your head towards the cup in your hand. A dry chuckle slipped past your lips as he sprinted to your desk, papers catching the wind and scattering all over the office floor. 

He swiped the cup from your desk, throwing his head back as he chugged it down like the cheap, diluted beer he must’ve drank last night—if you had to go by the smell of his breath alone. With a sigh of relief and the sugar flooding through his veins like amphetamines, he pressed his hands together in a silent ‘thanks’ before turning on his heel and speeding back through the office.

You watched him go. The sharp clicking of heels against the hardwood floors making the sheep you were counting in your head dance the Spanish flamenco.

“You look like hell froze over.”

A cup of coffee, still steaming, black as tar, found its way to your desk. They called oil the ‘black gold’, but you’re sure those people never had true black coffee. The bitter taste scraped down your throat, catching at the back as you choked it down.

Your gaze lifted to find your boss smirking down at you. Her eyes scanned you, nose scrunching up at the sight. “Scratch that, you look like hell froze over and then exploded from the sheer patheticness of bad decisions and three-day-old leftovers.”

Don’t engage, said the voice in your head.

Yet, the twitch of your eye is all the warning you had before your mouth took over. “Thanks, someone has to do the work you so graciously delegated in favour of a shopping spree—sorry—choosing professional business attire.”

She stiffened, eyes darting around before settling onto you with the same iciness that had frozen the hell she mentioned. “I don’t know what you’re talking—”

Your eyes rolled. “You do.” 

“You better keep your mouth—”

A dull thud echoed in the space between you as your forehead met your desk with more passion than you’d had in months. “I really don’t give a damn what you do with the government's money, boss.”

The silence stretched between you. Only the rustling of papers, the quiet murmurs and the giggling of an intern on a sugar high filled the stale office air.

You turned your head, the cold from the desk seeping into your cheek. You lifted your eyes to hers. The corner of your lip twitched. “Your secret’s safe with me.”

She held your gaze, brows furrowing together. She bent down, voice dropping to a hiss. “You’re a forensic data analyst specialising in fraud and you’re telling me you don’t care I’m defrauding our bosses? The actual fucking government?”

With a small shrug, your smirk widened. “I’m a forensic data analyst specialising in fraud and you think I don’t know how corrupt that ‘actual fucking government’ is?” You leant your chin on your hand, tilting your head. “You’re not the only one, boss. Loads of people carry secrets around here.”

Her throat bobbed, tongue running along her lips. She straightened herself. A scoff fell from her trembling lips. “Just do your job.” Her hand flicked her hair over her shoulder, the need to feel in control almost as tangible as the delusion she fed herself. 

You sighed and waved her off, sitting up and stretching your arms above your head as you watched her pivot and strut towards the glass door of her corner office. 

“Oh, and—” The sound of your boss’s voice had you ready to rip your hair out. 

It had been falling out anyway. 

Stress, the doctor had said.

Maybe take some time off from work.

Like it was your government job that stressed you out. Hell no. Your greatest treasure trove had gone off the radar after a deal went south. Radio silence ever since. He brought in a lot of money. Money you now missed. 

Your boss stopped before she closed her door, cash in her eyes and greed in her smirk. “We’re this close to catching Bonten’s money flow—and getting that bonus.” Her eyes glinted sharply. “The devil’s due comes for everyone, after all.”

Greedy bitch. To think you’d almost recruited her. She’d have become a liability and those had to be erased. You never liked the dirty work, but if you want a job well done, you have to do it yourself. 

A ping snapped you out of your thoughts. Eyes falling back to the monitor in front of you, the results of your latest analysis coming through. The hairs on the back of your neck rose. All sound disappeared, leaving only the echo of your heart in your ears. Your knuckles turned white from where you dug your fingers into the leather of your chair, the sharp pain from your manicured nail breaking barely registering as you blinked at your screen.

The devil’s due does come for everyone.

Even if ‘everyone’ is none other than the devil himself.

A/N: Hi! It's been a while, because life was life-ing. I'm quite proud of myself with this one. I feel like it has some more wit or sassiness which is more of the style I like to write, but it doesn't always come out how I want it to. I also feel like I wrote the emotion and tension quite well in this one.

Silence

You should cancel.

Tell him you weren't feeling well and he shouldn't come over.

It wouldn't be lying, not really.

Maybe it’s the fact the new school year just started and everything was new. The people, the schedule, the building itself. Add quite a commute and an already intense private life and your life turned out to be quite the mess.

Of course you knew it’d come sooner or later. A shutdown was bound to happen with everything going on.

And the fact it happened in the week your new boyfriend would be staying with you for a couple of days while your parents weren’t home just made a lot of sense.

You’d always been a little unlucky in life. Karma just had a way of reminding you every so often.

With Ren texting you he was around the corner, you’d finally crawled out of your cave. The room was dark, curtains blocking out the intense afternoon sunlight. You threw the weighted blanket off your body, rearranging your emotional support stuffed cat on your bed before slowly making your way downstairs.

The second your feet hit the bottom step, the bell rang, the sound dull through the noise cancelling of your headphones. The soft fabric of your oversized cotton shorts swished around your thighs as you opened the door to find your boyfriend, signature headphones on and lollipop in his mouth.

Your lips lifted in a small smile as you swung the door further open, watching as he shuffled inside and dropped his bag beside the shoe closet. 

His eyes met yours, lollipop swishing around in his mouth. He stared at you for just a second too long, his usual blank facade just a tad distorted as he raised his eyebrow.

You looked away. His gaze was uncomfortable to the point it almost physically pained you. Turning around, you motioned him into the living room, waving your hand towards the couch. 

As you heard him plop down on the couch behind you, you shuffled around in the kitchen. He always had a soda first when he came over. Usually he switched to simple water or tea afterwards. Always the same soda, the same routine. The structure of it was blissful for your overheated mind.

Plopping down beside him, close enough to feel connected, but far enough as not to touch him, you handed him the soda and watched as he cracked it open. 

The silence dragged on, settling between you for longer than it ever had. You’re used to silence with Ren. He was a quiet one himself, never really spoke unless he had to. It’s something you loved about him. It allowed you to be quiet as well, to not perform sociability when all you wanted to do was isolate and decompress.

Yet, as you scrolled on your phone through funny videos of cats and dogs and memes, you could feel his gaze burning into the side of your head. You could feel the way he shifted closer, freezing when you shuffled further away until you were pressed against the side of the couch. He stopped then. Not getting any closer—as if accepting you didn’t want to touch him.

Weird, really.

Physical affection was something most couples chased. Not that you were like most couples, but the fact he seemed to accept it so easily had your mind spiral before you recognized the spiral.

Your mind raced. He might not like you as much as you thought he did. There’s no other reason for him to accept your rejection this easily. He could also be cheating. That could be a reason he’d accept the lack of physical affection, simply because he got it elsewhere. 

The longer you thought about it, the deeper you got. A hot flash ran through your body, followed by the immediate feeling of a cold sweat on your back. 

You recognized the signs. Clear overstimulation. You’d been well on your way to decompress and balance the stress signals racing through your body, but Ren’s presence seemed to have worsened the overstimulation by simply existing in your general vicinity.

It’s unfair. You shouldn’t have to feel like throwing your boyfriend through the wall when he isn’t even doing anything.

Maybe you weren’t the right match, after all. You’d hoped it’d be different with him somehow. He was the quiet type, so there wouldn’t be as much stimuli, is what you’d thought.

Seems like you were wrong again.

He deserved a lot more, a lot better than you could provide him.

There’s no way you could ask him to accept this broken part of yours. The same part everyone either rejected outright or ignored until nothing was left but shards of a memory. 

You knew it wouldn’t go away. The process of grieving what could’ve been if you’d just been normal had been ongoing for years. It had taken you a long time to accept this part of you—still working on it, actually—but slowly, you were getting there. 

Unfortunately, accepting this part of you also meant accepting you’d lose people over it.

Even if you loved them dearly.

You hadn’t noticed the tremors in your hands until something heavy pressed on your shoulders, calming your body right down. Blinking, your eyes focused on the weighted blanket, vision blurry from the ongoing tears. 

The couch dipped beside you. Your gaze found his form settling back onto the couch, facing you as he pulled his legs up, your stuffed cat in his arms. 

He held it out to you, his face still in the same neutral expression he always wore. You gingerly grabbed the cat from him, pulling it close to your chest as the tears kept coming.

Not once did he ask anything. Not once did he reach out a hand to touch you—

And fuck if you weren’t grateful for it.

The tears released a tension in your muscles you hadn’t allowed yourself to feel in a while. Warmth spread through your body, melting away the chills and cooling down the heat. As if your body reached an equilibrium of calm in the safety Ren provided.

It wasn’t that his presence worsened the overstimulation.

His presence allowed your nervous system to feel safe enough to release the tension which had built up over the years.

It wasn’t gone, but it became just a little more bearable. Even if it’s just a smidge.

When the tears stopped on their own, like they decided they were okay now, right in this moment, you reached out to him.

Just a little, just a finger.

And he hooked his own around yours. 

Just a little, just a finger.

His gaze found yours, a small smile on his lips as he held out a lollipop.

The silence stretched on for the rest of the night, his finger stayed hooked around yours. And as the buzzing in your head started quieting down little by little, he simply let you be, letting you go at your own pace as you navigated through the noise in your head.

This is simply a part of you he hadn’t seen before.

And he’d accepted it as easily as he breathed air.

Sometimes, silence says more than words ever could.

A/N: I wrote this, because at the time I was in the middle of a shutdown myself due to overstimulation. Writing this brought me some comfort and also helped me shift my mind from being chaotic to just focussing on this one thing. That does mean my brain was basically empty as I wrote this, not caring about the flow, the words or anything else that's writing-related and heavy on the brain. More like journalling in a bit of an alternative way. Processing the backlog of stimuli if I had to name it. I hope you enjoy it and maybe it gives you some comfort as well.

This would always be your home. It’d definitely not been used since your high school days. The old nook in the park, hidden behind layers of bushes and shrubs, used only by you, Ran and the occasional homeless person.

It’d been years. Yet today it seemed to call your name. It marked a week after the verdict. A day after you stepped down as a judge and decided to leave the practice of law. 

Your heart couldn’t take the blood on your hands, nor the noise in your head. The one thing you had never wanted to do was betray your oath, but your oath to him would always win. 

You couldn’t bare it, the friction within yourself— so you’d decided to run, much like he usually did. 

Yet nothing had ever felt more liberating. No more eyes closing as you bent over case files early in the morning, no more dull skin and bleary eyes, no more muscles so tense your physiotherapist would joke they’d snap.

It had never been so clear how much of a toll your job, your life, had taken on you.

Maybe selling your soul hadn’t been the worst of your decisions in life.

The snap of a branch filled the air, leaves crushed underfoot as heavy boots came to a halt behind you.

You pulled your knees into your chest, wrapping your arms around them as if protecting yourself from the inevitability of what you’d done—

And who’d come looking for you because of it.

“Judge who’d saved the devil’s soul by selling her own steps down for good– unable to bare the pressure,” his voice dripped with sarcasm and poorly hidden fury. “They sure did you dirty, doll.”

A huff slipped through your lips, brows furrowing as you leaned your chin on your knees. Your voice barely a whisper as you stared at a beetle crawling along the ground, “It’s not like they’re wrong.”

You didn’t need to look at him, could picture the haughtiness of his smirk, the smugness in his eyes, the attitude of ‘I knew you’d be here because I know you better than you know yourself’.

A shuffle, a sigh— then he plopped down beside you, leg stretched in front of him as he leaned his arm on his knee. “Do you regret it?”

You briefly glanced at him from the corner of your eye before looking down at his hand placed so close to you. “Which part?”

“All of it.”

“No.”

He nodded, the smallest of smiles on his lips. “I thought so.”

A silence fell over you. There was no need to speak, to entertain. As much as Ran loved to tease and yap and annoy you until you snapped, it had always been moments like these you’d cherished the most. No performance, no pressure— just two people enjoying each others warmth as the world burned around them.

“I don’t take this lightly.”

“Take what lightly?”

“Saving my life.”

You shrugged, burying your head in your knees as a familiar heat crept onto your cheeks. “Just returning a long overdue favor.”

A hand brushed a strand of hair behind your ear, the softness of his caress sending a shiver down your spine.

He chuckled. “Still sensitive?”

You peeked from the safety of your arms, mouth open in a half impulsive retort biting your tongue as you met his eyes.

It had been so long since you’d really looked at him. Into those gorgeous eyes, cold yet with a slight sweetness only some could appreciate. Like the mint-chocolate ice cream he claims to hate yet always disappeared from your freezer.

His eyes closed as your fingers ran down his cheek. When you’d gotten this close you didn’t know, didn’t care. Still as soft as you’d remembered, a familiar scent lingering in the air between you.

“Still using the same cologne?”

“You said it was your favorite.”

He said it like an oath and in a way it was. Like you wore the outfit he liked, used the shampoo because he once said it smelled like home and still had a freezer stocked with mint-choco even if it made you want to gag.

With a soft sigh, his forehead dropped onto your shoulder. Your hands came up to run through his hair, shorter now, a little coarse from dyeing yet still undoubtedly him.

“Would you believe me if I said I actually prayed to whatever is out there? To meet you one more time?”

“Would you believe me if I said it was never a question to me whether or not I’d rule in your favor?”

Your shoulder shook as he chuckled, his arms coming to rest around you. He gripped you tight, moving you sideways into his lap as he laid your head on his shoulder.

“The second you entered that courtroom I knew.”

“The second I saw your name on the file I knew, too.”

His lips brushed against the crown of your head, so soft you almost missed it, would’ve believed you’d dreamed it.

A breath fanned against your cheek, voice dropping to a deep whisper. “I don’t want to let you go.”

You shivered, heat rushing through your veins, yet your heart clenched. “You already did.”

His grip tightened. “I know.”

Your lip trembled as you raised your gaze to lock on his. A breath caught in your throat at the fire burning in his eyes, not out of control like the world around you, more like the comfort and safety of a bonfire. Like the ones you used to make right in this nook in the park.

“Why now?”

He leaned closer, nose brushing against yours. His breath smelt like mint and something slightly sweet. His hair brushed against your forehead as his hands came up to cradle your face as if you’d break if he touched you too harshly yet afraid you’d disappear if he let go.

The heat rose to your cheeks, eyes falling shut as his lips brushed against yours, not quite a kiss, yet more intimate than if you were stood bare in front of him.

“You saved my soul—”

Your breath hitched, heart hammering in your chest as his lips met yours like it was the last time he’d ever feel them, reverent, a hint of desperation.

He separated just for a second, his eyes meeting yours with a quiet determination. 

“—The least I can do is take care of yours.”

And as you closed the gap between you once more, a new oath formed between you, unspoken yet unbreakable.

“All rise for the honorable judge [last name]!”

The sharp clicking of your heels on the hardwood floors cut through the tense silence as the doors to the courtroom closed behind you. Flashes went of in your peripherals, the snapping of pictures, the murmurs and frantic typing and scribbling of the press mere background noise to the storm wreaking havoc in your mind 

Your shoulders squared, relaxed enough to seem confident, tense enough to carry the burden of a case like this. The trembling of your hands carefully hidden by the iron grip on the folder in your clammy hands.

You sat down in your chair, the leather creaking just a little too loud, the papers a little too rough against your fingertips as you arranged them on the desk in front of you.

With a slow exhale, you dared to lift your gaze— he was already watching you, the brief widening of his eyes the only sign of something close to recognition. 

The corner of his lip twitched up just slightly, unnoticable to anyone not paying the utmost attention. Yet you always knew. It was as easy to read him as it was for you to fall for him.

And he knew it, too.

His shoulders relaxed, his feet stopped bouncing and the snarl on his lips dropped into a carefully neutral expression. As if he’d let go of all his worries, as if he knew he’d walk out of that room without as much as a hair out of place. 

As if born anew, a slate wiped clean.

And the dirt of his deeds, the blood, the pain and the suffering of all he’d impacted now clinging to your hands.

There wasn’t a hint of doubt in his eyes as they gazed upon you, a softness in them unseen by anyone unfamiliar with the expressiveness of his eyes alone. 

As the opposition brought their case before you, you listened carefully. They had the evidence. This wasn’t just a half-assed attempt to try and get him behind bars— it was a structural dismantling of all his crimes with the receipts to match. 

Enough to get him legally killed if you so chose.

You were proud of your title, proud of the work you’d put in to be where you are now. An example of justice, the nation’s poster girl for the system so eager to dance into the palm of your hand.

You hadn’t thought it’d be that easy, but it was. A couple of strings pulled, some favors called in from old friends back in the days you hung around them.

You’d walked into the office, working a little later than usual— a tired wink at your assistant and your juniors as you stayed late. Late enough for a sudden crash of the system, government servers wiped clean of several documents. 

Random documents of random citizens. They’d ruled it a freaky accident. 

You knew better.

And now the cornerstone of their defense had become unavailable. A single ID from back in high school, a single picture and description matching exactly with the CCTV footage that had gotten him caught in the first place.

Wiped clean.

His lawyer had jumped at the opportunity, had pointed out the lack of evidence tying his client to the actual crimes. 

They argued.

They deflected.

But the end result had already been set in stone the day his case ended up on your desk.

With eternal damnation clawing its way up your body, leaving goosebumps in its wake and ice flowing through your veins, the gavel came down.

“Due to lack of conclusive evidence… I find the defendant not guilty. The defendant is to be released immediately.”

He closed his eyes, shoulders dropping as he slid further down on his seat, hand clasped over his eyes as a choked laugh burst from his lips.

As the remnants of peace broke to pieces around you, the silence in the courtroom filled its remains—

Before it went ballistic.

If you thought the press had been bad before, they were so much worse now. Pushing and pulling and trampling each other to get even a single word from the lips of the judge who released one of the nation’s most sought after criminals.

“What do you have to say about today? How do you feel knowing he walks free?”

A bittersweet smile, a huff of something like a chuckle bordering on a sob.

“I sold my soul to save the devil.”

A/N: I'm just got back from vacation today, but I wrote this on the plane and have a third part written to end this little saga. I feel like it came together quite well and hope to do the same with the series I'm writing, although I feel a little stuck when writing series that run along canon/episodes. Feels a little stale sometimes, you know?

Maybe instead of 'not being able to write emotion well' it's more something along the lines of 'I've felt that scene a thousand times over and I've become a little desensitized to my own work'.

And Pt. 2 of that fic might take a little as I'm still on vacation, but I have been daydreaming about how I want this to end and I've got some ideas that feel very much satisfying to me.

It couldn’t be fate. Nor could it be karma. Both would be kinder to you than whatever has control over your life right now. 

The case file laid on the desk before you, sealed, untouched, unopened. Only silence remained in your office after your assistent briefed you on tomorrow’s case.

She’d said it was a big one. A criminal, internationally wanted at that, had been caught only weeks before. The case had been bumped up, unable to stay on the bench due to its severity and publicity.

He was a flight risk. You knew that better than anyone. He’d flee if anything came to close to being real—and now he couldn’t anymore. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

Only his actions and their consequences.

You breath shook as it slipped through your lips, a trembling hand reaching for seal. It broke easily, as it always did, but you’d hoped today it wouldn’t. That it would stay sealed and save you from the inevitable.

Your assistent hadn’t let any names slip, but you knew it had to be someone from Bonten. The way she’d whispered and rushed through her briefing left no room for interpretation. Your walls had ears, your shelves had ears and the shredder—that one could talk even if only scraps remained.

As your eyes darted across the papers, your leg started bouncing and your shoulders tensed. You let out a shuddering breath as you read the one name you’d hoped you would never see again.

Haitani Ran.

So, he’d gotten caught. For murder, blackmail, assault, fraud—your eyes widened slightly as page after page of specified instances and gruesome details unfolded. 

The taste of bile rose at the back of your throat, tingling on your tongue and bitter in your mouth. You pushed it down, gritting your teeth as you powered through the charges against him.

It sucked. If the prosecution had even a shred of evidence he’d be thouroughly fucked and not in the way he liked. 

A sigh slipped through your lips, head falling on the headrest of your chair. You stared up at the ceiling. Your vision blurred.

Squeezing your eyes shut, you clawed at the tears, a bitter laugh on the tip of your tongue.

He’d be in for life—that’s best case scenario. More probable is him being sent to death row.

The thought of it sent a wave grief through your body. As you trembled in your seat, tears slipping down your cheeks, your phone pinged.

With heavy hands, your phone showed an email confirming the time and date of the trial. In the span of one week his life could change, in the span of a day yours already had.

As the day of reckoning approached, your mind hadn’t let up. Your thoughts spiralled every hour, your emotions were all over and your body had started sending uncontrollable tremors down your spine. You felt as though possessed—possessed by the thought of him.

It’s been a trip down memory lane, that’s for sure. Every street, every park and every creviche screamed at you when you walked home through Roppongi’s nights.

The street where he’d grabbed your waist and pulled you close after a night out, stumbling as you tried to keep each other balanced. The park with the secret nook you’d gone to to escape the outside world. 

Everything reminded you of him.

Of your relationship.

Of the sacrifice he’d made for you when he was only thirteen.

You’d been assaulted and he hadn’t taken kindly to it. It was the first time you’d seen death—and it terrified you.

After that, he always kept his business seperate from you and your life. Until he couldn’t anymore, because they came too close.

As much it hurt, it filled you with a warmth you hadn’t felt since he left you in that same secret nook, crying but smiling all the same. 

He’d done it because he cared. 

He’d flee to the end of the world if it meant you’d have the life you deserved.

And he’d given you exactly that—on paper at least. Nice apartment, nice job, nice friends. Everything was just that. 

Nice.

You didn’t want nice.

You wanted him.

He’d saved you, not just once or twice, not just with loud words or brazen actions—he’d saved you with confidently, swiftly and unconditionally.

Now you had a chance to do the same.

And you’d decided the moment you laid your eyes on his name you’d do everything in your power to save him.

You’d sell your soul to save the devil.

He’d promised he’d make it hurt. 

He always delivered.

No matter who it was, where they were or what they’d done. If they hurt you, they never would again. 

You watched the world burn around you, flames licking at your heels, your hands, your face—but there was no heat to it. It didn’t burn you, didn’t hurt.

You’d hurt enough, hadn’t you?

He seemed to think so too.

But it didn’t seem like he felt the same for those who’d hurt you. 

You hadn’t seen him like that, never. Not when he’d come home bloody, not when he’d beat up anyone who looked at you wrong before wrapping his arm around your waist and pulling you close.

His eyes had glazed over—not fear, not anger either, but grief.

Your steps fell silent as you sat down beside him amidst the fire. You watched the flames turn his skin red, angry, blisters forming yet he remained motionless.

As motionless as the bodies laying by his feet, black, crunchy. Their screams still echoed in your ears as they begged, pleaded, grovelled at his feet soaked in gasoline.

His lips had spread into a grin, one just for you, as he'd lit the match and dropped it on the first one.

The door slammed open, people rushing in, pulling him to his feet and out the door as the sound of an explosion echoed in the distance.

The fire flared as you ran after them, through the halls, the doors and finally, through the wall to the outside. 

It was cold, flocks of white flowing gently from the dark as they gathered on the ground like a blanket. 

Your feet carried you towards the crowd of pink, white and purple hair, leaving no traces in the snow.

His hands trembled, jaw clenched as he screamed at his brother, throwing his hands out to keep him away as if he'd burn him too. He gripped his hair, ripping at the roots.

His voice died down as he slumped onto his knees, his chest heaving as he stared down at bloodied hands and bruised knuckles.

The silence stretched, the fire blazing behind you as you watched.

A small smile played on your lips as you crouched down beside him, placing your hand on his cheek, the other running through his hair.

He shivered, hand coming up to his cheek as he snapped his eyes shut.

You stood with him as he pulled himself to his feet, head tilted towards the sky as he shoulders fell, his eyes cleared up when a single snowflake mixed with a tear and ran down his cheek.

A slow breath slipped through his lips, the cold air turning it as white as the snow.

He looked over his shoulder at the carnage he left behind, just a brief look before he stepped right through you and into the van beside Ran.

Their screams still echoed in your ears from when the fire had eaten them alive as you looked at the ashes rising into the sky, your smile widening as a gentle warmth surrounded you.

You closed your eyes as it enveloped you, feeling yourself fading away like the headlights of their van in the distance.

He’d promised he’d make it hurt.

And he always delivered.

You'd once told him loyalty was your only redeeming quality.

You didn't think you'd ever have the chance to prove it.

Your head spun, ears ringing as another blow landed on your ribs. 

The pain no longer registered. Only the crunch of your ribs breaking filled your ears. Felt the blood dripping down your temples. The growing numbness in your limbs as a chill settled in your bones.

How did it get so far?

You’d come back to Japan from working abroad to celebrate your sister’s birthday, but when you stepped into the taxi—everything went black.

Then you woke up, chained to a wall by your wrists, to the floor with your feet. When they’d taken the blindfold off, you knew you weren’t making it out alive.

They’d set up the camera in front of you. A livestream sent directly to Bonten’s headquarters if they decided to open the link.

As soon as the little light went on, they knew it was showtime.

They let you believe, whispered sweet nothings about how if you worked with them, they’d let you go.

You only had to give up what you knew about Haitani Rindou.

You hadn’t heard the name in years—had no idea what they wanted from you. You had no information to give, as the last time you saw him had been when you broke up before you left the country.

They must’ve been pretty desperate to get to him if they came to you.

A small smile played on your lips at the thought—before they slammed a bat into your head, the sound of a crunch echoing through the empty cellar.

A laugh burst out of you in short huffs and coughs.

Your jaw moved in a way it shouldn’t. 

They snarled they’d break you, their breath like sandpaper against your skin. It’s not like they could.

When you looked them in the eye, they stilled for just a second, time frozen as the fire in your eyes burned brighter than the darkness in their hearts ever did.

Before you left he’d said loyalty had been your only redeeming quality and even that had been a lie, his eyes cold, a mocking smirk on his lips as he wished you well and turned on his heel, leaving you standing at the gate, a smile on your lips as the tears flowed freely down your cheeks.

You’d known it was just a facade, if only for the look in his eyes when he looked over his shoulder one last time, and you’d whispered he’d be okay, hoping the air would carry your words to him. 

Black spots crawled around your vision, the ringing in your ears grew louder. The cold of the floor seeped into your skin as your eyes focused on the camera. 

You’d said loyalty was your only redeeming quality, and now you had a chance to prove it.

A declaration left your lips, sent to the person who’d once held your heart in his hands, still, after all this time. 

With a last, shuddering breath, you mustered a smile meant only for him.

And the camera’s light turned off.

A/N: I don't know if I should be proud or sorry. This just happened to be stuck in my mind when listening to too many Tokyo Rev playlists. It might suck, it might not, but at least it's out of my head and into yours.
