iran has recently killed another kurdish kolbar on june 15 outside of sardaşt in eastern kurdistan [iran-occupied]. [tw: link is graphic]

a kolbar is a ‘border courier’ but to many other groups it could also mean ‘smuggler’ -- which is inaccurate because kurds have participated in this activity for many years before the borders crossed them. there is no real word for ‘smuggling’ in the kurdish language, as kurmancî-speaking kurds have to borrow the turkish word [kaçakçılık] in order to describe it.

due to racist, anti-kurd policies from tehran, extreme unemployment and lack of financial investment put into the kurdish regions of iran, many kurdish men decide to become a kolbar in order to make some type of income. the poorest families in iran come from the ilam province and the kurdistan province with an average yearly income of 20,415,000 tomans (5000 euros/5594 dollars).

many kurds living in border towns become human pack mules as it is the only job available in these economically desolate regions

it is extremely dangerous as these men are traversing through steep mountainsides covered in leftover mines from decades of war with many men carrying packs weighing more than 100 kilos/220 lbs. they traverse through freezing temperatures, risking hypothermia and getting caught in avalanches. not only that, but they have to avoid being killed by iranian guards on the border.

iran does have a “system” to allow these kolbars to cross borders but there is a waiting list which only allows these kolbars to cross legally only 3 times every month.

in 2016 alone, 43 kurdish kolbars were shot and killed by iranian guards.

since the beginning of 2017, 37 kolbars have been shot and killed while 73 were wounded.

in iran, one of the most marginalized groups of people in iran are the kurdish kolbars as there are no laws asking for protection against iranian border guards. similar incidents occur in turkey, where kurdish kolbars [in turkish: kaçakçılar] are killed based on false pretense that they are “pkk guerrillas”. the most deadly and famous incident is the roboskî massacre where 34 kurds (mostly teenagers -- all from the same family) were murdered by an airstrike from the turkish air force

the france-based kurdish human rights watch has released a 2016 annual report on the kurdish kolbars.

Les forces de sécurité iraniennes ont de nouveau attaqué, dimanche, un groupe de kolbars dans les environs de la ville kurde de Kermanshah. Selon les informations publié par Kolbernews, un kolbar âgé de 24 ans a été tué dans l’attaque et neuf autres personnes ont été blessées.

Kurdistan : 80 kolbars et kasibkars tués en 2019

Selon un rapport de Kolbarnews, pas moins de 80 kolbars et kasibkars ont été tués dans les zones frontalières séparant le Nord (Turquie), l’Est (Iran) et le Sud (Irak) du Kurdistan au cours de l’année 2019. 183 autres ont été blessés suite à des explosions de mines, des attaques des forces du régime iranien ou pour des raisons liées aux conditions climatiques.
