Life as a Korean Student - Reading(Studying) Room 독서실
Hi! This is Admin Ju. Today I'm going to introduce you reading room(독서실) in Korea. (What we do in the reading room is basically studying so it can be called as the studying room. But the direct translation of 독서실 is reading room so we will just stick to reading room:D)
When you do something that requires concentration, where do you go? In Korea, there is a place where students go to concentrate on their studies. the place is a reading room. It is not only for students but also adults. In particular students come more during the exam period than other time. why is that? Because of distractions at home. There are no distractions in the reading room. And I feel pressured to study in the atmosphere that everyone is studying in the reading room.
The reading room is usually open for 24 hours. Prices vary from reading room. These days, there is a Kiosk(unmanned system) that customers choose their own seats and pay for them. It does the role of an empty magnet in the reading room and the overall management of checking in and out of the room. There is various types of room. Individual Room, Solitary Room, Open study room and social space. So, I can choose place that I can concentrate on study. Each reading room has almost same options. But the users of the reading room will be provided with unlimited Wi-Fi service and personal storage space. Also, you can check study hours by using the attendance check of Kiosk and rent laptops and prints. Besides, that is a lounge in the reading room. Some reading rooms have simple snacks such as candy, eggs and jelly in the lounge for students to eat when they are hungry. when I look at these advantages, I think the reading room is the best place to concentrate.
However there are drawbacks. The downside of the reading room is taking a lot of time to get to the reading room and something expensive because we have to pay hourly.
Finally, there are two rules that must be followed. First, don't make a loud noise. If you make a noise in the reading room, the reading room manager warns you or kicks you out. Second, don't eat stinky food on your seat. You can only eat food in the lounge. If you keep these two things well, you can study without any problems with other people.
