The TAZ Fandom is missing a vital opportunity

Okay. The reapers.

We know they go around fighting evil undead necromancers and stuff. That’s the majority of the ‘Reaper Art’.

And don’t get me wrong. It’s badass and fun. Love me some undead hunter shenanigans. 

But you know what else reapers are traditionally thought of doing in folk lore? And what, from the Balance finale, we know they seem to do in the podcast too?

Escort the dead.

They’re a kind of psychopomp; a guide for the souls of the dead. 

And I want to see that in some Balance fanart.

A Kraavitz who’s been a reaper for centuries, who’s gotten used to his main interactionswith the living being just as they’re on the edge. Who’s sat with the elderly, leaving after a long life; children going too young from disease or starvation; everyone in between, from war or accidents or murder. 

A Barry, who knows what it’s like to die himself. Who’s a little awkward, at least at first- but who knows the right kind of smile some people need, or a deadpan joke, or fun fantasy science fact to distract them.

Lup, who’s know for being Loud and Big and Vibrant- and that’s what some souls need. And for the others... Well, she shows that gentle side of her, calming like a candle in the dark.

Show me the reapers that let everyone know, “It’s going to be alright.”

Summary: Today is your graduation day, from Taako’s Amazing School of Magic, no less. To the surprise of no one, your guardians are possibly the most supportive parents there. They’re certainly the rowdiest. 

A/N: Hey, I’m sorry this took so long! I kinda got worse before I got better with being sick… And I’m also sorry that you’re having such a rough time, taz. You’ve been so sweet and kind to me in my time writing on here, and I’m so so flattered that you love my writing that much! Anyway, I hope you enjoy! 💙💙💙

You took a few deep breaths, settling your nerves as best as you could. 

Today you were graduating. After four years in Taako’s Amazing School of Magic, you were finally graduating as a fully fledged wizard! You were youngest in your graduating class, of course, at only sixteen. Angus was too, as you remembered, having graduated a week earlier from Lucas’ own school. Taako’s academy wasn’t exactly easy, or safe for that matter, having to be constantly alert due to the schools duel system. But it was the best wizardry school in all of Faerun, and more importantly it was your guardian’s school. 

Now, you stood on stage in the auditorium, waiting for your name to be called to receive your diploma. It was bittersweet. You’d be leaving school, sure, something that had been quite stressful at times, but you’d also be leaving what had been more or less your home for four years.

“Finally, last but certainly not least, my child, (Y/N) (L/N)!” You were jolted from your thoughts at the sound of your name, and you grinned, finally crossing the stage to where Taako stood waiting for you by the mic. 

You stopped in front of him, and he smiled, handing you your diploma and replacing the plain brooch on your wizard robes with one emblazoned with the school’s crest. Then, unlike what he’d done for the other students, he swept you into a hug, letting you go a moment later to daintily swipe at his teary eyes. 

“Whooo!”

“That’s our kid!” You heard from the audience, and you glanced over to see it was, as you’d expected, Magnus and Merle cheering, with Kraavitz and Angus sitting calmly next to them, clapping with the rest of the crowd. 

“You’ve done so well, kiddo. Almost all grown up.” Taako told you softly, patting your head fondly. There was another pause, and he nodded for you to move on to stand with the other students.

Ren guided you to your place in the front row of graduates, and after a quick pause for a class photo, you were all allowed to disperse. You quickly found your way over to your adoptive family, following the continued sounds of cheerful yelling. 

“Hey, kid!” Magnus called as you approached, and the rest turned to you with varying levels of excitement. 

“Hey, guys!” You replied, letting them all (even Kraavitz) pull you into a group hug. 

“Congrats, kiddo. A fully fledged wizard! I remember back when you could barely cast mage hand…” Merle told you. You laughed. 

“That was only, what, five years ago? I’d be worried if you couldn’t remember that.” He waved your comment off good-naturedly, reaching into his pocket to grab something. 

“That reminds me, I have something for you! A fun graduation gift, you know.” 

“Merle…” Magnus sighed exasperatedly. “No one likes your gifts.” 

“C’mon! They’ll love these.” He held out a handful of little root beer barrels, each covered in lint. You grimaced. 

“Merle, these were already out of date the last time you offered them to me, and that was four years ago. I appreciate it, but… You know I can’t accept these. Maybe give them to Mooky?” You offered, and he nodded, giving a faux-sad sigh as he returned them to his pocket. 

“Guess no one appreciates my gifts…” 

“To be fair, Merle, Magnus did try to warn you.” Angus said, breezing past the dwarf to stand by you. He was taller than you now, by a fair bit, comfortably resting his arm on your shoulder. 

“We’re all very proud of you, (Y/N).” Kraavitz said, and you smiled. He wasn’t technically one of your guardian’s, but he was Taako’s boyfriend, and that made him close enough in your book. 

“Thanks. I’m happy I was able to make you guys proud.” You said honestly. 

“Are you kidding?” Taako gasped dramatically as he joined your group. “You could probably become, like, an evil necromancer or something and we’d still be proud of you.” 

“I don’t know about that.” Kraavitz winced, and you and Angus both laughed. 

“You get the point though.” Magnus said. “As long as you’re doing your best, and keeping true to yourself, then we’ll be happy with it.” 

You blinked away the happy tears coming to your eyes. “Aw, stop that. You’re making me all mushy.” 

“How about we get out of here? I held off my graduation party for a week so we could have it together. We’re keeping the others waiting.” Angus suggested, and the rest of you agreed, quickly finding your way out of the school and to where the rest of your friends were waiting to throw you and Angus’ party. 

It had been a long road to get here, not even counting the events of the Bureau, but it was one you were glad you took. Looking at your friends and family around you, the family you chose, you couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

A TAZ bed-sharing head canon

Sleep is complicated in the Taako-Kravitz-Magnus household. 

First, there's Taako: he likes to pretend he doesn't need sleep ("I'm an elf, dammit"), but when he crashes, he crashes hard. On bad days, he gets night terrors and his screams wake the whole neighborhood. As he struggles towards consciousness, his brain betrays him: Lup is gone, Kravitz drowned in the astral plane's tar black sea, the Hunger is bearing down. He clings to Kravitz when he's home (and he tries always to be home at night now), and when he isn't, Magnus rushes in.

They've all learned the tricks: keep a stone of farspeech close with Lup on speed-dial, put a picture of the family on the bedside stand. It helps, and some nights, Taako doesn't wake up at all. Kravitz loves to watch him sleep on those nights, snoring lightly, safe in his arms. It's lovely.

And then there's Magnus. He's never slept well, even before the Stolen Century, and his ADHD makes it hard for his brain to shut down at night. When it does, he has bizarre, vivid nightmares that send him scrambling for his axe, shaking and sweat-drenched. 

When that happens, he goes to find Taako. If he's in bed, Magnus slips under the covers with him as quietly as he can (which isn't quietly at all) and listens to the sound of his breathing. If he's awake, he joins him in whatever he's doing. Taako always makes room.

Angus helps Taako devise some strategies to help Magnus sleep better. He's the first to suggest a weighted blanket (his own is a life-saver) and black-out curtains. On nights when his brain just won't shut off, a back-rub from Taako can usually do the trick.

And who could forget Lup? She and Barry have their own house now, but the two residences are connected via magical portal because there's no way the twins are going to be more than a door away from each other if they can help it. And if she's a little touch-starved after a decade in the umbrastaff, who can blame her? Some nights, she literally shakes from the need to be reassured that Taako is real. She slips through the portal and into Taako and Kravitz's room, wraps her arms around her brother, and settles in. If Kravitz is there, he makes room for her. One night when she is particularly anxious and Taako is in the middle of a rare, deep sleep, Kravitz reaches across the bed to her and she shuffles over to curl up in his arms, never letting go of Taako's hand.

Angus is home for a school holiday and wakes to footsteps in the hall. When he follows the sound, he finds the master bed packed: Magnus spooned around Taako who is face-to-face with Lup; Barry on her right, arm flung over her hip; and Kravitz looking on, smiling fondly.

"I think there's room on the end," Kravitz whispers to Angus in the doorway. 

He summons his scythe and tiptoes out to answer the Raven Queen's call as Angus burrows under the covers next to Magnus. 

"We must get a bigger bed," he thinks as he steps into the astral plane.

truly and honestly was not prepared to be introduced to Kravitz on the drive home today like they named him and I nearly hit the brakes like “I’m sorry Taako dates a giant crystal monster????????!!!!”

I mostly use picrews for making DND character icons! So elf ears, fantasy skin colours, tusks, and angel wings would all be bonuses!
