Impression on an autumn afternoon: Kulshan - Mt. Baker from San Juan Island, Washington, 2002.
I am uncomfortable using First Nations names for major geographic features in the PNW. I am too old to have learned them in school for aside from occasional references to "Tahoma" for Mt. Rainier, those names were not used. It is also the case that there were several names in different languages for the volcanic features which can be seen over great distances. Thus what was named by the Europeans Mt. Baker has several names "Nooksack: Kweq' Smánit; Lushootseed: təqʷubəʔ),[9] also known as Koma Kulshan or simply Kulshan," and it is unclear which should be used. The U.S. Geological Survey has a board on geographic names which assigns official names for use by public bodies, and using their guidance Mt. Baker is still acceptable.
