A Family of Daruma Dolls...

Behind the main hall of Achi Shrine, we found a small area filled with rows of Daruma dolls — all those round, red faces staring out with their wide eyes. It was such a striking sight, almost a sea of bright red watching over the shrine.

Daruma (達磨) dolls are modelled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, and are seen as symbols of perseverance and good luck. Traditionally, people paint in one eye when they make a wish or set a goal, and fill in the other once it’s achieved. Seeing so many together felt powerful — like the collective hopes and dreams of everyone who’d visited.

It was a quiet little spot behind the shrine, but full of colour, history, and that hopeful energy that makes you pause for a moment before heading back down the hill

一泊二日の岡山旅1日目。昼過ぎに到着し、吉備路文学館、岡山県立博物館、岡山後楽園を巡る。夢二郷土美術館と岡山城も行ければよかったのだけど、梅雨明けであまりにも暑かったし、旅程を詰めすぎるのも気が向かなかったから断念した。旅行はこれくらいのんびりでいい。

岡山から倉敷へ移動し、ホテルにチェックインして小休止、シャワーを浴びて、マッチングアプリで会う約束をしていた子との夕食に備える。ドキドキとワクワクを抑えて、待ち合わせ場所と時間を送ったが、急に返信が途絶え、約束していた19時を過ぎても音沙汰がなく、こりゃブッチされたかなぁと思ってヤケクソで岡山B級グルメ・デミカツを食べた。気まぐれで入った店だったが、地元ではちょっとした有名店らしく、めちゃくちゃ美味しかった。

アプリを開くと、岡山・倉敷エリアに住む男たち何人かからメッセージが届いている。岡山来てるんですか、観光ですか、面倒臭いやりとりなしでサクっとヤりませんか、云々。急に一人になって暇を持て余しているとはいえ、魅力的な誘いではない。お腹いっぱいだしホテルに帰って大浴場とサウナでゆっくりするかーと考えはじめたところ、会う約束をしていた彼からメッセージが届く。仕事終わって家で寝ちゃってました、今から急いで準備して行こうと思うんですけど大丈夫ですか。そうして、もともと会うはずだった時間から1時間半遅れて彼はやって来た。
