   not being able to sleep through the night is nothing new for matt, used to being startled awake by the sounds of the other prisoners, or the voices of galra guards. nightmares, too, were not foreign to him, and though he was technically free from zarkon’s rule, his time after the kerberos mission still haunted him. 

    enough so to jolt him awake in the middle of the night, panting lightly in the cool air of his small room. in the soft light he can see his hands shaking, and knows where they are littered with scars though its too dim to point them out. he pulls back the covers and limps to the door before he can convince himself to go back to bed. 

    the trek to shiro’s room is short enough, but every limping step makes the journey seem much longer. matt hesitates outside the door, shoulder pressed tightly against the wall so his leg wouldn’t have to bear the full weight of his body while he debated whether or not to head back to his room. 

    in the end, the knock he gives is barely a whisper of rapped knuckles, voice just as soft as he calls out. “ —- shiro? are you awake?”
