Kurt Eisner (1867-1919) was the German, well Bavarian, revolutionary leader who we can only wonder at with hindsight. As a journalist he was rejected by the editors of the papers he wrote for, surprisingly because a Social Democrat, where the paper which was Marxist. That as Marxists they did not find cause with a fellow republican who managed to peaceably evict the royal family of Bavaria should not surprise anyone. That he should be assassinated by a bullet so soon after affecting permanent change in his country should be more of a surprise Would that circumstance would permit such charismatic leaders to arise, and arise more safely, today. German Jew and Marxist Kurt Eisner (1867-1919) was a journalist, theatre critic, and revolutionary turned politician. He started as a journalist on a Frankfurt newspaper. Between 1890 and 1895 he wrote a republican piece for the paper calling the the resignation of Kaiser Wilhelm II for which he was imprisoned for nine months. This must surely have burnished his reputation among republicans. Some time after the prison sentence he edited the newspaper of the Social Democratic Party but five years later was called to resign for the unorthodoxy of his Marxism. Later, confined to Bavaria he formed an Independent SDP and called for strikes in munitions factories in 1917. He spent another nine months in prison. After this sentence he fomented a full revolution and without spilling blood overthrew 700 years of Bavarian monarchy and the rule of their key allies, the Prussian military, along with all their Capitalist hangers on. Early on in his premiership of the Free Bavarian Republic he released the Prussian army papers which proved that it was they who were pushing for war in 1914. Kurt Eisner died after being shot in the back three months later. In 1989 a monument to him was unveiled in Bavaria. Here is more information about the man and his times.
