David Dastmalchian as Kyle Slade in 12 Monkeys — S02E06 "Immortal"
12 MONKEYS: 02x06: Immortal: What if Kyle was right…?
Have a thought…
Well, have a bunch, but this one actually goes somewhere… kinda sorta.
First, three points on which this thought sits…
The first two, we observe in “Immortal.” The third is conjecture, but not what I’d call a longshot…
1. Immersion allows the Witness to inhabit the Immersed’s mind and body. To what degree, I’m not certain. Might be like riding shotgun, aware, but not in control, along for the ride. Or, might be full on puppet-master. For now, either way will do.
2. Kyle Slade is a Primary, a somewhat cracked Primary, but still, a Primary. A Primary who believes that he’s captured the Witness. When he leads Cole to his captive, however, Cole recognizes him as one of the Messengers who Splintered out of 2043, and thusly, NOT the Witness.
3. The Messengers have been engineered and indoctrinated to serve the Word of the Witness. They are able to Splinter without an injection of quantum serum and seem to possess the strength and healing associated with it. So, the benefits of the serum have been passed on to the Messengers by blood or augmentation. As Messenger Vivian says, Father made them too well. I don’t think it’s a huge leap to think that Immersion would be part of the Messenger package, too.
So, I theorize that the Witness was riding in or driving the psyche of the Messenger when Kyle subdue and captures him. Perhaps the Witness gets himself/the Messenger caught intentionally, to lead Slade down this fateful path. Because he’s captured, and for SOME reason finds he can’t kill him on his own, Kyle sends up his Victoria “flare” and draws Cole to this time and place. Why? I’m not sure about that, yet, but perhaps to get him away from Cassandra?
Maybe the Witness lingers in the Messenger’s mind until Cole is brought before him, and then chooses to beam out, back to the limbo of the Red Forest, or—time shouldn’t be a factor as the events are years apart, but maybe subjectively, for the Witness—over to Cassie in 2016.
So, Kyle *did* capture the Witness, whom he could sense via his Primary-ness. But he was tricked into doing it by the Witness. What does the Witness achieve by this? Hrm…Some possibilities…
1. Slade was supposed to kill Victoria and then be paradoxed by a Messenger (that’s what happened in the reality of the 2044 from which Cole and Ramse Splintered). Cole’s interference saved them both (I’m looking forward to seeing Victoria and her kid again in another era). Getting Cole to meet and then kill Slade gets the interfering Primary-killing Slade off the board.
2. Slade passes certain information, no telling how much is accurate and not, to Cole along the way. This will no doubt feed into conclusions that Cole and Team Splinter try to make about the Witness’s next and maybe final moves. All according to plan.
3. As I mentioned above, keeping Cole (and Ramse) busy in 1975 and away from Cassandra and 2016.
Yeah, nothing too Time-shattering, but every little move could lead to something bigger, right?
Frankly, I really like the idea that Kyle *did* sense the Witness in the Messenger he caught, and that the Witness knew it. Reasons are still a little on the thin side. Let me know if any click for you. =)
Unmake history!
Keep on keepin’ on~
P.S. Another possible bonus for the Witness…
Did Cassie experience reality changing around her in 2016 when Cole saved Victoria in 1975? Did the ripples of that change somehow give the Witness an opportunity to exploit her Immersion more quickly or completely than usual?
