Hux: I had a bad childhood.
Kylo: I know.
Hux: What do you mean ‘I know’?
Kylo: Look at you.
Hux: What do you mean ‘look at me’?
Kylo: Look at how you stand. People with good childhoods don’t stand like that.
i’m feeling things i’ve never felt for adam driver before
People think that Snape fans believe he was good because he died for the side of good?
This was later compared to Kylo Ren. It was said since they both died for the side of good that people think they’re good and it erases all of their bad deeds.
But, there is a fundamental difference or differences between Snape and Kylo. Which is why one is most favorite character in HP and the other is my most hated in SW.
Kylo was a grown ass man who was a commander or whatever shit and gave orders to nuke a planet. He literally killed trillions of people. He’s been been doing this shit for literally years. Let’s keep in mind that Kylo was privileged as hell and had loving parents. Kylo had a support system. Even when he was at his worst, his parents still saw the best in him.
Snape was a kid poor kid who was abused and bullied when he got involved with the death eaters. When he was 18, he became a double agent and fulfilled that role until his death. He knew it was possible he was going to die and still committed to an agreed he made under duress. He didn’t care if people saw him as a bad guy or not dying as a hero, he still did the right thing and do so for 20 years. He didn’t have family or support, all he had was Dumbledore who could be manipulative at times.
This doesn’t erase that Snape was occasionally malicious to a handful of students, but he also wasn’t as bad as painted. And this is important to note because when you actually assess snapes worst actions compared to other teachers, you have his insults next to assault and allowing a kid to be locked out of the common rooms while a killer is on the loose.
Again, how Snape treated Harry at times is not acceptable, BUT his redemption arc was about him atoning for becoming a death eater and telling Voldemort about the prophecy, which led to lily dying.
Snape fought on the good side for 20 years. Even tho he knew what was likely his ending. Kylo died for the good side after a day of being “good.”
Snape chose time and time again to commit to his double agent status and protect hardy and assist the good side regardless of what others thought about him. He saved people he didn’t have to save because it was not required of him. He protected students who would’ve been tortured if he hadn’t sent them into the woods.
Snape was a deeply flawed person, BUT for those who do believe he was good, it isn’t because he literally died for the good side. Him dying is actually one of the many actions he committed on the good side.
Most of his fans believe he was a grey character.
With Kylo, he needed the forgiveness of his mother to flip sides. He needed her to tell him he was good or whatever shit.
Snape flipped sides when he realized his grievous mistake and even tho he knew he’d never get forgiveness, he still did the right thing (atoning for joining the death eaters).
And, ironically, despite the fact that most Snape love Alan rickman, they prefer book Snape because Alan’s casting and some of his mannerisms as Snape distort the narrative. Snape was often called ugly, not sure how true that was, and Alan’s maturity negates snapes petulance in the books.
Snape is loved because he wasn’t a “good victim.” That doesn’t mean some of his behavior was acceptable, but he was allowed to be complex and not just “I don’t believe I’m worthy of love and friends even tho I’m a good person.” He was toxic at times, bitter, and angry and still ultimately tried to do the right thing. I’d actually argue that despite his behavior with students at times, he gave less harass punishments and actively cared about the students well being.
Besides the surface level comparisons, Snape and Kylo are nothing alike.
Also, whether or not it’s canon, whatever the tie in books said is an example of poor character building (Star Wars). People talk about kylo’s backstory, but as a movie goer, I shouldn’t have to read the book to understand his character. That should be self evident based off of the movie, which is why I ignore tie in books.
Tie in books are only interesting if they expound on a well explained point. Not when they introduce something most haven’t read and won’t read.
Waiting for TROS is like reading pride and prejudice one line at a time every two weeks
