LA Auditions: S14, Ep.2
Quick observation before I really get started - I like that they’re not wasting production value / money on the auditions too much. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the backstories, but I’m fine with finding them out later. Whatever saves the money to keep this show on the air is FINE BY ME.
Another observation - I’d like to see some of the choreography round, just because I like to see that step in the process. Just me?
Tristen and Jensen, Ballroom - Oh hey, Lindsey Arnold’s little sister! She is SO CUTE. I have to say, even though they did a great job, I was a little more impressed with Treten that Jensen. Her footwork was a little heavy, and she pulled a little too much face for my liking. She definitely has a wonderful personality and star quality, but not sure if she’s as good as her sister. We’ll see what they do at The Academy.
Cody, Hip Hop/ Belly Dancing - Is that Mary Cherry from ‘Popular’ in this guy’s promo package? Also - just when I said they weren’t wasting production value on auditions...#facepalm. Belly dancing + hip hop fusion = low expectations. It wasn’t actually as bad as I thought, but obviously not enough for this show. Cody seems like a nice guy though, and I love how positive the judges always are.
Sade Keinu Austin, Hip Hop - I love this girl before even watching her dance. Her smile is infectious and her parents are obviously big in the dance world, so she’s already got a leg up. She was very smart with her audition, and I loved the music, locking and overall energy. I have a feeling that this is the first of the “dancers that can do everything but label themselves as street dancers with no training for the show” trope. Fine with it though because I feel like this girl is going to be good.
I interrupt this blog to say that Cat Deeley is an angel. That is all.
Matthew, Contemporary - I’d send this guy to the Academy just based on his little clips in line. He’s clearly a star. His audition piece was the perfect combo of power, grace, theatricality and OMG that center! Travis Wall is going to have a field day with him. Can they please have a spin competition because WOW. Academy, duh. Add one more to the “great dancer but
As always, the montage of dancers they like but can’t officially play their audition music. Of these three, Peyton looks good / perfect for the teen girl demo. Taylor looks really good and for some reason seems like she would have a good personality. Chelsea looks AWESOME and has GREAT hair. Wonder what songs they couldn’t get the rights to? ;)
Inyoung “Dassy”, Animation - It’s pretty incredible that she moved to America because of SYTYCD. Season 3 would have that effect though...great season (I might be biased since it was the first one I watched). I love everything about this girl! Right off the bat, she is adorable and I just want to pinch her cheeks. And her popping was incredible, thank goodness! I totally agreed with Mary that she is a complete entertainer. Vanessa’s comment about her being feminine and also masculine was actually very astute, and I’m liking her more and more as a judge. So glad they sent her straight to Academy. Well deserved!
**Slight technical difficulty. Missing about 5 minutes due to a TiVo (yes, I actually have real TiVo) malfunction. It cut out after “Dassy” and came back during Blessing’s critique. I’ll have to watch those lost auditions on the interweb later. Sorry!
Another montage, my fav! Triple jointed as a style is absolutely INSANE. I seriously wish we got to see the full auditions from Eric “Frenchie”and Felix “Bad Bonez”, but I’m glad they made it to choero.
Dustin, Animation - Former street performers have done alright on this show, so I am excited to see what Dustin can do. He’s charming af, and I love his personality even before watching him dance. And then he danced and I DIED. Who else can’t wait to watch him dance with Fikshun? @sytycdrankings? Bueller? This kid is Top 20 material, for sure.
Choreo round claimed some featured dancers, but I have a feeling we will see all of them on the show during the seasons.
As for the New York audition promo at the end - my jaw literally dropped. Every clip they showed was absolutely incredible, and I can’t wait to see all of those auditions. Please show them all, Nigel!!!
So, what did y’all think?
