4. Queer Japanese books

Prompt 4 of portugue​’s Langblr Pride Month Edition challenge:

Find a book with queer main characters in your TL that you’d like to read.

I’ve read the translated versions of Yukio Mishima’s Hidden Colors and Banana Yoshimoto’s Kitchen, which are well known works of Japanese queer literature. I don’t think I can manage a whole book in Japanese at the moment, but I’d like to try reading Hardboiled, one of Banana Yoshimoto’s short stories. In Hardboiled, an unnamed woman hikes in the mountains on the anniversary of her female ex-lover’s death. She experiences a few surreal incidents after passing a strange shrine with black pebbles and learns to make peace with her loss.

クイア日本文学の例としてよく知られている三島由紀夫の「禁色」と吉本ばななの「キッチン」の英訳版を読んだことがある。今は日本語で本が読み終えられないと思うけど、吉本 ばななの「ハードボイルド」って短編小説を読んでみたい。「ハードボイルド」では、名前のない女性の主人公が元恋人の命日に山をハイキングする。黒い小石のある不思議な神社を通り過ぎた後、シュールな出来事を経験して悲しみや元彼女の死を受け入れる。

Àpali, aquí teniu (per fi) la llista de la qual no deixo de parlar, és més aviat una versió esborrany per si de cas teniu alguns suggeriments (hi ha algunes cançons que no m’agraden del tot però si esperés fins trobar-ne de millors ja estaríem esperant fins al juny de 2022 :P). Langblr Pride Month Edition... 2!

Day 2: Make a small vocab list in your TL with words related to identity (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, etc.!)

Well, i have made 0 vocab lists before and I was going to spend more time trying to find things but uh... trying to debug code kind of got in the way.

That and there's not really much in the way of lgbt terms to be found, at least, not where i was looking. So... a very tiny list, and more than likely there are mistakes >_<

& dont tell anyone but i poked around on wikipedia for most of this

Гей – Gay (this can also be just "hey" due to the fact that г is an h sound in belarusian. I'm not sure if it's actually an h when said out loud, though?)

(At a guess, nonbinary is probably similar to небинарные, but I'm not actually sure.)

11. 「差別は許されない」はダメ?

I read an NHK article titled 「差別は許されない」はダメ？ (No way to ”discrimination is unacceptable”?) about the failure of Japan’s government this week to pass a law to promote “LGBT understanding”.

Information from the article:

Japan’s Diet ended its session without passing a proposed law on “LGBT understanding”. The bill was dropped by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), despite the fact that the LPD had promised in 2019 that such a bill would pass before the Olympic Games, which Japan will host in 5 weeks under the motto “Unity in Diversity”.

The Olympic Charter clearly bans discrimination. Gon Matsunaka, the head of Pride House Tokyo Legacy, considers the failure to pass this bill a breach of the contract with the International Olympic Committee.

In May, the words “discrimination (on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity) is unacceptable” were added to the bill. Conservative lawmakers expressed concern that this would lead to an increase in the number of claims of discrimination and the number or related trials. ⬅️ HOW IS THAT A BAD THING?

It’s been a busy week, so I’m playing catch-up 😆

8. If you’re comfortable, make a recording of you speaking in your TL about your favorite memories related to Pride Month - it can be about a parade you went to, or maybe a nice moment with your friends. Nothing’s off limits! If you’d prefer, written is great too :) 

4年前に、クラスノダール（ロシア）とナンシー（フランス）って２つの姉妹都市からきたクィア活動家がイベントに参加して、LGBTQI+人としての現地状況や活動を説明してくれた。プライド パレードの間、私はその活動家たちと行進していて、みんなの感情的な顔に気付いた。クラスノダールの活動家にとって非常に深い意味を持っていたのは人前にクィアの愛や多様性が祝えることだね。私は本当に感動した。

また、クィア映画を観たり議論したりするのが大好きなので、気に入っているプライドイベントは「プライドピクチャーズ」って国際的なクィア映画祭だ。６月のプライド月間中で行われないけど、毎年10月に自分の住んでいる街で２週間開催される。毎年友達とずっと楽しみにして、数年前は母とさえ観に行ったこともある。そして映画祭りの初日パーティーに出ていい思い出がたくさんある。

9. What’s a slang word used by the LGBT community where your TL is spoken that you love? If you don’t know any yet, feel free to look one up and share with us!

専（せん）is a suffix meaning “specialty”. I’ve heard it used among queer Japanese men. It’s added to words to describe what you’re into:

顔専（かおせん）Face-focused (you notice someone’s face rather than their body)

体専（からだせん）Body-focused (you find someone’s body more important than their face)

誰専（だれせん）Who-focused aka chemistry-focused (not focused on the face/body but more focused on someone’s “vibes”)

外専（がいせん）If you’re into (Western) foreigners…

The second image makes me so happy, firstly because 十人十色（じゅうにんといろ）is one of my favorite Japanese idioms! Literally “ten people, ten colors” with a meaning of “to each his own” or “different strokes for different folks”

And also because of this message: 

１０年前のわたしへ (To me 10 years ago) 女の子が好きでも (Even if you like girls) ちゃんと幸せになれる (You can truly be happy) ２０歳のわたしが証明済み (20-year-old me has proven that)

In the third picture, the sign reads 同性婚の実現を！Make same-sex marriage a reality!

3. Oslo Pride

Day 3 of Langblr Pride Month Edition by portugue​ with a prompt that I had a lot of fun researching!

Does any place where your TL is spoken celebrate Pride? Is it in the same month? How is it celebrated?

Oslo Pride takes place every year in the second half of June and lasts for 10 days. The festival’s history goes back to 1974, when around 250 activists and members of the queer community gathered at Universitetsplassen to pay tribute to the Stonewall uprising. 

The festival and parade are organized by FRI – foreningen for kjønns- og seksualitetsmangfold (FRI – The Norwegian Organization for Sexual and Gender Diversity). This group has been active in Norway’s gay rights movement since 1950, when homosexuality was still a criminal offence.

During the 10-day festival, a variety of seminars, film screenings, concerts, and shows - not to mention Prideparaden - take place. In 2019, around 450.000 people participated in Oslo Pride, and Prideparaden, which first took place in 1982, is Oslo’s largest parade besides the 17th of May parade. 

🌟  Something new I learned 🌟  Since the early 1980s, the Homofrydprisen has been awarded each year during Oslo Pride to one or more people, companies, or organizations that have made a positive impact in supporting queer people and fighting for queer rights. In 2020, the Instagram and Tiktok account hverdagsskeiv (lit. “daily queer”) won this award. There is also the the honorary prize Årets æreshomo which is awarded to a person, actor, or organization that has contributed to the position of queer people in Norwegian society. Slam poet and author Guro Sibeko was last year’s winner. When I took a look at these awards’ recipients of the past 10 years, I became really curious to learn more about their work! 

This year, it will be possible to access some of the Oslo Pride events digitally! The program will be available online starting June 10th - I’ll make sure to share it once it’s up!

5. Thelma (2017) - Queer Norwegian Thriller

Jeg så denne filmen for to uker siden, og jeg likte det veldig godt! Jeg vil beskrive det som en thriller med overnaturlige og folklore elementer. Dette høres kanskje rart ut, men filmen var intens på den roligste måten…

Hovedpersonen, Thelma, vokste opp i en streng religiøs familie på Vestlandet. Dialekten hennes er litt vanskelig å forstå for meg av denne grunn. Hun begynner å studere i Oslo og møter Anja. Rett etter at de møtes for første gang, opplever Thelma et anfall, og disse anfallene fortsetter når Thelmas romantiske og seksuelle følelser for Anja utvikler. Hun forteller ikke overbeskyttende foreldre sine om det og går til en klinikk for å prøve å finne årsaken til anfallene. Foruten den fantastiske framføring til skuespilleren Eili Harboe som spiller Thelma, likte jeg virkelig kinematografien til denne filmen! Den får en til å føle Thelmas forvirring, begjær og frykt. Filmen har mange starke scener, som denne.

I watched this movie two weeks ago and I really liked it! I would describe it as a thriller with supernatural and folklore elements. This may sound strange to say, but the film was intense in the calmest of ways. The main character, Thelma, grew up in a very religious family in Western Norway. Her dialect is a bit difficult for me to understand for this reason. Thelma begins her studies in Oslo and meets Anja. Right after the first meet, Thelma experiences her first seizure, and these seizures continue as her romantic and sexual feelings for Anja develop. She doesn’t tell her overprotective parents about them at first and goes to a clinic to try to find the cause of her seizures. Besides the amazing performance by the actress Eili Harboe who plays Thelma, I really enjoyed the cinematography of this film! It really makes you feel Thelma’s confusion, desire and fear. There are several scenes that stuck with me.
