My contribution to langblr selfie day.

My langblr story: I started taking German in seventh grade (typical-ish grade to start a foreign language in the States) because my grandparents immigrated to the US. I never met them and my dad spoke very little German around the house; so all of my German I learned in school. I have been to Germany a couple of times to visit my dad’s cousins though. Then sophomore year in high school I started learning Latin because my brother had taken it and he had a great time. Our teacher was the best and her husband actually taught the Classics at the local university so like my brother, I got to take an intensive Ancient Greek course there one summer for free!! Then at university I minored in Mandarin Chinese but I also took Russian classes. I also took some higher level German classes and my professor recommended me to be the German tutor, so I was the German tutor at my university for three years, which was actually less tutoring and more guys misinterpreting your friendliness. Even though I have since graduated from college and work full-time, my langblr journey is not over yet! Right now I am focusing on French and Spanish because I have been dabbling for so long that they finally deserve my full attention. I also study some Korean, Japanese, Hindi, Persian/Farsi, Arabic, Welsh, Irish, Turkish, Italian, and Portuguese. And of course, I still try to keep my German, Russian, and Chinese skills sharp. Since it's #langblrselfieday, as seen in my dashboard, I guess this is a great moment to get back to Tumblr. So this is me, Clara, part studyblr (Diplomacy) part langblr (mainly French and Arabic), and my awkward photo as I never take selfies and I don't know how to hold my phone.

yooo it’s langblr selfie day from what i’ve seen, so i decided to post a selfie (even though my blog is part-languages, part-studying, and part-books, but i’m going to let that slide). 😅 i’m helena, i’m 20 years old and i’m from malta. i’m studying for a B.A. honours degree in english, with hopes to do my masters degree in translation next year. coming from malta, i’ve grown up speaking both maltese and english. i used to study spanish at secondary school and at sixth form, but was interested in it since i was about 9. i always try to immerse myself in the spanish language even if i don’t still study it at uni now, so i still read a lot in spanish, listen to music in spanish, and watch a lot of series in spanish too! in 2016, at uni, i took up a german certificate course and i’m currently in A2 going into B1. i’m in love with the german language, even though it can be quite tough at times. i also started taking brasilian portuguese classes at uni last february, and so far so good. 😌 i hope to live abroad someday also, but i’m not sure where...i’ll go wherever the wind takes me. 🙆‍♀️

Hello, I heard it was some sort of selfie day today so here I am! This picture is over a year old but I can’t be bothered to take a new one today tbh, so you’ll have to live with this one I guess.

Language story under the cut. Feel free to correct my Maltese, most of it is guesswork honestly so if it’s even understandable I’m happy!

I’ve always been a bit of a language nerd, but that didn’t usually extend to what we had to learn in school. I’m from Finland but my native language is Swedish and the medium of instruction in my school was always Swedish. We started learning Finnish in 3rd grade, but I was not motivated to learn it at all, and neither were most of the other kids. So I never really got a good start in Finnish.

We started learning English in 5th grade, and that went much better than Finnish. Probably because I had more motivation, and because of the exposure you get from the internet, TV, etc.

In 8th grade we had the option of adding one more language, either French, German or Russian. I originally chose Russian, but there were like four other kids in the whole school who also picked it, so they didn’t make a class for us. I changed to German, which I’m quite happy for because besides English, German is probably my best language now. After two years of German in school I was better at German than Finnish (probably because I actually made an effort to use German outside of school, mosly online)

Since then I’ve gone on to study German and English at university, and loads of languages on my free time, but most of them I never really got any good at because my self discipline is frankly shite. I can communicate in Dutch and Esperanto though. Now I’m trying to learn Maltese, and I’m hoping I can stick with that for long enough to at least be able to have basic conversations.

🌷 hej hallo hoi ciao salut こんにちは🌈 i am Chiara, 20, Northern 🇮🇹, i love to draw and languages, (i made my avatar myself)

i’ve been interested in languages ever since i was very small, my favourite subject was 🇬🇧 and i wanted more hours of it at school and i wanted to speak 🇩🇪 when going to south Tyrol, i was jealous of the Swiss because i thought they could automatically speak 4 languages since their birth!! in middle school i wanted to study spanish as 2nd foreign lang, but my school had 🇫🇷 and i disliked it at first. then i decided to attend a foreign languages lyceum and i was so happy i could at last study 🇩🇪! I also started to love 🇫🇷 in high school. Last year i decided to start studying seriously by myself 🇸🇪🇳🇱, although i love all nordic languages 🇮🇸🇩🇰🇳🇴🇫🇴 and i’m also interested in 🇫🇮 and maybe slavic ones 🇨🇿🇷🇺🇵🇱 and celtic ones 🇮🇪 i’ve tried to learn 🇯🇵 randomly since i was 11 but i’m trying to study it seriously too, altho i can read/write in 🇯🇵 a bit in 🇰🇷 and hopefully cyrillic too soon !

Langblr selfie day! Feat. my kitty Kibou (yes, like 希望, because I’m a dweeb)

I got into anime in my early teens, which quickly turned into an obsession with Japanese media and fashion that I’ve very much carried with me into adulthood (I’m 22 now).  I’ve been seriously studying Japanese for about 3 or 4 years, but on and off because self-employment means I go through some very busy spells haha.  I love the feeling of satisfaction that comes with studying language, and eventually I’d like to study German and ASL as well :)

I’ve been picking back up with my studies lately, which is exciting! But now I’m super busy again so I only have time for flashcards 😭

Yes, I’m trans, no I’m not really all that masculine. I’m one of those people who think  you can be trans without looking that way.

I’m a bit nervous to post my face here, because I didn’t want this blog to be too personal, but here you go.

My name is Caden, I’m trying to study Spanish, Japanese, Korean and Swedish at the moment.

I’m not very motivated right now, but I’m sure I’ll get back to studying soon.

I grew up in Germany, and learned English, French and Italian in school there, so that’s when I started loving languages.

Currently I’m studying languages because I think they’re beautiful, and I want to learn every language in existence, but... 4 is already more than enough.

Oh, I’m also married and have a three year old daughter. And I’m 24.

Happy Langblr Selfie Day ✨ I wasn’t sure I was going to participate but you know… why not. (Most of you prob have seen them cuz they were/are my icons). Here’s an abridged version of my polyglot story:

Depuis les jours quand je pouvais regarder Dora tout le matin, je voulais apprendre l'espagnol. Donc, ayant 4 ans, j'ai fini un manuel d'espagnol. Et après, en fait, à l'école j'ai pris des classes d'espagnol mais on sait tout auquel niveau les E.U. valorisent les langues étrangères. Mais, c'était les études de latin, une langue “”“morte”“” qui a fait revivre mon amour des langues. Et puis, j'ai pris des classes de français pendant que j'ai appris en ligne (j'ai crée ce blog!). Et un peu plus tard, j'ai ajouté à ma liste: le grec ancien, l'arabe, l'allemand, l'esperanto, et l'espagnol (encore).

Kiam mi estis juna, mi regardis Dora kaj mi volis lerni la hispanan. Do, mi komencis. Al lernejo mi provis lerni pli da hispanan, sed mi ne lernis multe. Kiam mi lernis la latinan, mi komencis ami gramatikon. Tiam mi lernis la francan kaj mi faris cxi-tion blogon. Kaj baldaux mi volis lerni multe da lingvoj.

When I had the time to watch Dora all day, I decided that I wanted to learn Spanish. So I completed a basic Spanish textbook when I was four years old. I tried to continue learning it at school, but the systems at my schools were lacking. I didn’t regain my interest/hope in language learning until I began learning Latin (yep the “”“dead”“” language). So, I took french soon after and learned a lot in conjunction with help from the internet (I made this blog around that time). Then, my polyglot dream began…I soon added ancient Greek, German, Esperanto, Arabic, and Spanish (back) to my list….and today my list is still growing.
