The end of the big honey flow approacheth, and the bees are looking strong! I should get a decent harvest this year, and then the plan is to split that big hive a few ways and support them through (gods willing) making their own new queens. Wild mating cuts what you have in half, of course, but that queen's been too good to not try to replicate her.

Have you ever accidentally squashed or damaged one of your queens? Perhaps you were being a bit rough while pulling frames out from the brood nest or maybe she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Either way, it sucks. It’s nice having hives at the farm where I work, and right by the driveway to boot, because I can stop and look at my bees flying every time I come and go.
I guess this is a bit what it’s like having bees on your own property, which I have never done. One day, maybe. And many thanks to the farm intern who mowed around the whole area! I was planning to weed whack it (suited up, mind you) to save anyone else the trouble, but he just went for it, so now I don’t have to.
Apiary construction continues. I ordered so much foundation that instead of little boxes with 10 sheets each, it’s sold by weight and comes in a large box of 25 lbs. I also finally got the correct size (1/8″) of hardware cloth for the screened bottom boards. Had to order it online, as no one local carries any smaller than 1/4″. Quarter inch is too large for the bees to defend, and window screen is too weak to hold up. Ask me how I know.
