In Portuguese and Spanish there are two verbs for the verb "to be": ser and estar.

So when do you use which one?

Ser is used regarding more permanent ways of being, such as one's name, hometown, nationality, etc.

Estar, on the other hand, is used for things that change over time, like your feelings, where you are, who you're with at any given time, what grade you're in at school, etc.

The title of Frozen's Let It Go song was translated into both Portuguese and Spanish as "I am Free", but in Portuguese the song uses the verb estar while Spanish uses the verb ser.

I am not native in my native language anymore, I am forgetting words, I am not thinking in my native language anymore I am translating into it...

a while back I was grocery shopping with my fam and I wanted to say something about something, yk, as one does. but I needed to halt in the middle of the sentence. I couldn't fucking finish the sentence bc I was thinking in english and translating the sentence into german WHICH IS MY NATIVE LANGUAGE BTW and I just couldn't. 😭 I didn't know the word for it. I forgot 😭

anyway a nice language fact on the side:

the word for 'vocabulary' in german is "word treasure" (wortschatz) and I think that's beautiful. language is a treasure
