this chain was getting super long but i still wanted to say something @satosugusy
maybe it’s not to you, but this is part of fighting against the system. if people can’t handle respecting language of the marginalized (or at least handle being told why the language is the way it is), then how are we expecting them to handle the other parts of the work?
white people only now waiting to understand what state-sanctioned violence and police brutality is doesn’t give them a pass to misuse these phrases and then feel upset when they are told why their usage of such is co-opting—the word woke is included in that as well. “woke/wokeness” is not forced. mainstream culture and white people just stuffed the term into everyday vocabulary based on another misunderstanding of what it actually means.
and oh how i wish it’s “always been black/white/hispanic/etc against the white system.” that would be a dream. however, that’s not even close to being true and one of the biggest reasons that we are where we are in the first place…
so yes. the goal is to call people OUT and then INTO a space of learning from and alongside those they claim to be fighting for.
my autistic ass is once again begging people to stop calling her “Morgana La Fay” because that is not actually her name and every time I see it my soul leaves my body a little 😭
it’s “Morgan le Fay/Fey” or “Morgana le Fay/Fey”
NOT “la Fay”
because “le Fay/Fey”/“la fée” literally means “the fairy” in Old French. it’s a title/descriptor, not a surname
so “Morgana La Fay” is basically the equivalent of saying:
“Morgana the the fairy”
which sounds like someone lost a fight with Google translate
and yes, there are a million spelling variants:
Morgan
Morgaine
Morgana
Morgain
etc because medieval texts spelled things however the hell they wanted on a given Tuesday
but “la Fay” specifically is modern internet mutation disease
Thomas Malory popularized “le Fay” from the French “la fée” in Le Morte d’Arthur and earlier Geoffrey of Monmouth used “Morgen” in Vita Merlini around the 12th century
you’ll see:
* Morgan le Fay
* Morgan le Fey
* Morgaine le Fey
* Morgana le Fay
across different retellings, translations, and adaptations because medieval spelling was basically:
“does this resemble the sound I meant? fantastic. send it.” 😭
the important part is really the structure:
[name] + le Fay/le Fey/la Fée
where the second half is the epithet/title tied to “fairy/enchantress”
Arthurian legend was literally my first hyperfixation as a child so unfortunately this information is fused directly into my spinal cord
Sometimes I think that the discussion about androcentrism in Russian language (and in some another Slavic languages) is a very specific topic so there is no need to translate my thoughts about that into eng... Like, who needs to hear about the importance of feminine forms and other obvious linguistic things, right?
...and then someone writes "but many people use guy/man/bro as gender neutral"
so specially for Tumblr:
original (but idk, maybe meme on russian was the translation of original english feminist meme... lol)
Tbh I feel like going to the US while the Nazis are in power is suicidal. So of course I don't understand your choice of going instead of your SO coming to Europe. But while I don't understand, I wish and pray for you to be safe. Whatever you choose, I hope you guys will be okay
You might be right. I have no idea what the future has in store or if I'll come to regret it. But I've already stated my reasons. As it stands, with the year-long process we've already started and that we can't just flip on a dime overnight, my partner can't come and stay in Europe legally just like that. Legal immigration is not that easy in one way or the other. Also... Yeah, I've stated that before, but one shouldn't underestimate how shitty things have been getting in Europe for the past few years as well, and how the influence of the US (which is huge) is likely to make things worse. So again I'm not 100% sure whether that'd have been better anyway.
Also also... Ima be real, I've shared that before, but the time where I was separated from my partner due to the travel ban was the only time in my life where I had actual suicidal ideation. I don't want this to happen again. That's why I'm making moves so it doesn't, first and foremost.
Because apparently this is the hot topic at the moment:
I know I don't speak for everyone, obviously, but I really don't think that enjoying a live action 'remake' means we prefer the live action form to the original animated form?
Now don't hear what I didn't say. There are terrible... imma call them Reformattings instead of Remakes. Terrible reformattings out there. Lilo and Stitch? Awful. Lady and the Tramp? Awful. But there have been good ones, too. HTTYD. Beauty and the Beast. Maleficent.
And YES, Maleficent counts BECAUSE.
Yall don't understand how fairytales work. The animated versions of the things you love so much? Probably already a story that's been told before. Even HTTYD was originally a book series for kids. And you know what? I remember how absolutely feral people who loved the books were when the animated movie came out. A lot of you sound a lot like them.
Here's why that's BAD.
Yes. Making shitty media just for money is bad. Completely changing key details of a story will fundamentally alter its quality. (See Lilo and Stitch). Imma keep using Lilo and Stitch as an example because it went on to subliminally enforce imperialism and specifically clothes harmful colonialist ideas that USAmericans have been both perpetuating and trying to get away from for the last 250 years.
But. BUT.
Stop being assholes. Just stop it. You don't have to like it. Stop making other people feel like shit just because they do. They are allowed to like a bad movie. Should they maybe be conscientious of what the money they spend supports? Absolutely. As adults we should be critical, to some degree, when we have the energy and space to do so, of the media we consume, too. That's a no brainer.
But no one is remaking the movies you're so staunchly defending. Remake implies erasing the original content. It implies that the fundamental story is being irreversibly changed. Lilo and Stitch and Eragon are great examples of this.
What's happening is reformatting in the case of movies like the live actions The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, the most recent Narnia movies, and HTTYD. The story isn't changing, but the form in which you're consuming it IS.
There have been other live action movies to come out that have been retellings. Beauty and the Beast and Maleficent and The Little Mermaid and Snow White are perfect examples. They are stories that have changed with every telling since they were first told. The details that change have changed because some little kid thought their version sounded cooler, so that's what they told their kids.
HTTYD from books to animated movie was a retelling. The story changed but fundamental details remained the same. HTTYD from animated to live action was a reformatting because most everything stayed the same.
Get your language right. Get off your high horse. Admit that you specifically have an issue with something instead of saying 'If you like this then you're BAD'. Let other adults apply their own critical thinking, decide what they want to spend money on and support, and instead of being assholes actually spread awareness about the people working in animation losing their jobs because of the increased popularity of live action reformatting, about the dangers of imperialist views, about how to vote to make the changes you want to see instead of being bitter and crabby.
Get your head out of your halo and stop treating people like the people YOU claim to despise.
Lunar New Year marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar. The holiday is known by different names in different countries. For example, in China it is called Chūn Jié, in Vietnam it is Tết, in Korea it is Seollal and in Tibet it is Losar, just to list some of them. Feel free to mention others in the comments.
To call to it Lunar New Year means it’s inclusive to all who celebrate, as opposed to using the blanket term Chinese New Year. To use the latter implies that the holiday is exclusive to China and the Chinese people.
By casually calling this day “Chinese New Year,” we are forgetting the many other East and Southeast Asian cultures that celebrate the beginning of the lunar calendar. The erasure of those other Asian cultures who celebrate this holiday is important to consider.
It’s indicative of the much repeated pattern of a diverse and multicultural society trying to group seemingly similar cultures together. This speaks to the ways in which Asian people and our culture are often treated as a monolith and experience many generalisations and ste reotypes. I think it’s important for us to be recognised for our differences rather than being endlessly grouped together under the umbrella of “Asians” or “Chinese.”
To this end, I personally feel Lunar New Year is the most inclusive phrase to use (unless you’re certain of one’s cultural background and may therefore decide to be more specific). I still have my moments where I have to correct myself and refer to it as Lunar New Year. Language is important. Making this small change and correcting ourselves is a small step in helping to make people feel included, seen and respected.
“Because of the crisis” clause: The ultimate takeaway of Joe Biden’s faulty healthcare argument
Because of the crisis - no one has to pay for testing
Because of the crisis - no one has to pay for treatment and drugs
Because of the crisis - no one has to pay for hospitalization.
1) So in your vision, the American people are constantly hoping for crisis - that mass cases of illness effecting large populations are classified as a crisis and a national state of emergency, to not financially ruin people? So we’re constantly enabling reactionary measures to every new crisis / outbreak instead of stabilizing the healthcare into a true system to weather the tides of future health challenges.
2) So heart disease, diabetes, late stage cancer, and all of our personal crisis on a mass scale with life threatening consequences, effecting large populations - sorry not sorry?
These are the symptoms of systemic illness in the American...I can’t even call it a health or a care system...insurance minefield that can only be remedied by universal healthcare via Medicare for All. We must react now, but we must be prepared in perpetuity.
